The Mk4 has much more fully defined wheelwell openings. With my Mk3, and others that I have seen, the fiberglass was just kind of left to run wild after the opening. It seems they often needed additional filling and repair to get a nice shape. Judging by Steve’s #7276 that appears to be a thing of the past; it just needed a small amount of filling at the lower front of the RR and the rear edge of the RF. Here is the right rear as delivered:

I first cut them back using an abrasive disc on an angle grinder, then worked them down further with the DA and 80 grit. After that it is up to your eyes and hands...sorry, no secret special tools!

The body molds have a break that surrounds the fuel filler inset. On every body I have ever seen of any vintage that area is one of the most ragged, usually with some voids. You just have to get the flashing down and start building it back up while shaping with Rage. This is another area that seems to be done best with hand work rather than any kind of blocks or tools:

re. driver side door alignment

Jeff, looking real nice. Im happy someone is doing a body thread on the mark 4. Very inspiring to us body newbys. I have the same body and the driver door is just as bad as the mk. 3. I have about 3/8" low on bottom front door so that tells me ffr didnt address the problem. Yes I pulled the body out to help the fit as much as possible. I was wondering if anybody cut the lower front seam on the door skin to pullout the door to flush and fill the gap in the seam ? Keep up the good work and thank you.

Jeff, it's funny I really like the red shiny gel coat on the new Mk. 4's, but seeing it all over the floor in the sanding dust looks like something radioactive went off.

I'm sure jealous at how fast this is going for you (basically about 1 month in on body work, eh?) I guess the 2nd time makes it go faster.

Okay, I'm about ready to do my Camry...almost (inside story between Jeff, Thierry and me).

Steve owns the dust so he might want to keep it as a souvenir! Maybe we can send it back to Wareham to be recycled. It was warmer when I did mine so I was able to do about 90% of the work outside keeping most of the dust out of the garage. I don't know about the red being radioactive but it sure does have a distinct odor that the black gelcoat did not. :puke:

Remember Scott, this body has not been on the chasis for door, hood and trunk fitting yet. I'd like to think that progress can continue to be swift but once the movable panels meet the body it could be payback time.

I could have done without that news Kevin...I guess I'd have found out for myself soon enough, huh? :sad:

I really don't do much but stand or sometimes sit and watch Jeff. Well I went home the other day and my wife asks why were my blue jeans pink. I blamed Jeff.

I’ve received a couple of PMs asking for a progress report. Last update I thought I’d spray Slick Sand early this week, but was forgetting that the first autocross of the season was last weekend. Can't miss that! :) Between setting the course on Saturday and running on Sunday progress was limited to just easing over edges on things like the door, grille and vent openings plus finishing off the raw underside of the hood scoop (which, in keeping with the tradition of the crooked molded in scoop of the earlier cars is not curved symmetrically ;)). I spent Monday & Tuesday evening giving the body a final wash and getting the garage all set up as a makeshift paint booth. Was planning to pick up the SS and head home early Wednesday afternoon to shoot it but as the world turns “stuff happens”. My wife spends winters in Florida with her horses. Just as I get to the paint store I got a call that one of the 4 legged beasts that is still here got into something and had a couple of cuts that the vet should probably look at... so instead of spraying primer I went to the barn to meet him. Got home yesterday afternoon to find almost no hot water... after 13 years the dip tube in the water heater popped loose. Damn, another complication! Picked up a new tube this morning and will change that out when I get home tonight. Soooo, barring anything else I’ll spray Slick Sand and turn this thing gray tomorrow!

Looks Good

I like this thread as I will soon be at this juncture. I haven't done any bodywork in years, but these threads give me the feeling that I can do it also. The last car I did bodywork on was a Sunbeam Tiger I owned in the early 70's. I think it was a 1967 model.

How many hours do you think you have in the sanding, filling etc part fo the body.

That's a full gallon. Would liked to have put another quart or two on it. As it is I decided to forego the top side of the hood to put more on the body. Will go another round after fitting the doors, hood and trunk. Got the heat cranking in the garage; thermometer sitting on the body buck shows 83* and climbing! Just gonna' turn out the lights and let it cook all afternoon...

Steve, you'll notice that I used "your" stool as a painting stand for the scoop---I hope that's allright! :)

Nice job Jeff! Just a warm up round for the next stages of primer, paint, clear coat...ha ha ha...don't you just love the smell of hardener in the afternoon :w00t:

Knowing what I do now, it would be better to have another gallon on there before you even think about block sanding, but like you said, fit the doors, and then you can spray more.

BTW - that's cheating having that large built in heater right there.

Looks like your using a gas furnace for a heater. Carefull with all the fumes in the garage, I see your pulling air from the garage for combustion air. Used a kerosene heater years ago and had a small incident with high paint fumes. Just be carefull.

Thanks for the concern but relax, that furnace is not being used. I pulled it out of a building we demo'd a year or so ago and thought about using it for the garage only but reconsidered (I need to drag it out of there some day). The house and garage share HVAC. I've added three 8" runs to the garage with a damper in the main plenum. I can send all of the conditioned air to either the living space, the garage, or blend it.

and its great washing it down with a cold beer.
You are right Leo! So great in fact that I washed it down with a couple more;)

I’m going to keep my fingers crossed and hope that some of the main body to movable panel interfaces that were frequently problematic on Mk3s, such as the leading edge of the driver’s door, have been resolved.
I hate to be the second to report in how horrible the doors fit. Drivers door, bottom edge is very low and going to require lots of filler, leading edge on the body roll is way past the body on both doors. Hood fits good..... Trunk fits decent, it pulls into shape when you latch it, make sure you put the weatherstrip on it. That made a HUGE difference. It took 3 days to fit the panels and I still haven't got the hood on the hinges yet. I'm a tad disgusted with the quality of FFRs door molds. Especially since its been a known problem for a while.

Body is on, windshield and splash panels installed, sidepipe cutouts trimmed for clearance. I forgot what a tremendous pain in the arse the rear QJ bolts are with the fuel tank installed :mad: ---got a plan in mind on how to deal with that for the final body installation.

It isn't so noticable when the body is on the buck but after getting it on the chassis with tires the new non-perky butt becomes more apparent.
