Bad Accident

On our return from a cobra meet in Conroe this weekend I saw what I had hoped to never see. A couple of good friends of mine that have cobras and our wives made the drive from Kingwood TX to Conroe TX to the meet and made about 1/2 the drive Saturday when we had to return home so we proceeded to make our way through some back roads (scenic route) and a woman ran a stop sign and hit my buddy right in front of me.

Thank goodness we were not going fast! We were moving about 55 as we approaced an intersection that was a 2 way stop, with large signs for the crossing traffic that said "cross traffic does not stop and the woman did a "california roll" through the sign and the worst part was that it was blind because of the brush, none of us saw her coming until it was too late.

In typical fashion I was following a 2 second rule while following my buddy and let me just say to Gordon, THE WILWOODS WORK. Had I not had a good brake system I most likely would have plowed into the wreck myself, as it was I stopped about 20 feet shy an rolled to the front of my buddies car and did all I could until the ambulance arrived.

Kirk and Dody will live to go on the next ride; however, they were both hurt pretty bad and the car is a total loss. There were 5 passengers in the other vehicle 2 of which were young kids whom all suffered minor injuries, mostly due to the air bags I suspect. The 5 passengers from the other car were treated and released from the hospital in a few hours. Dody had to have some stitches in her face where some debris hit her, lost several teeth, broke her cheek bone and suffered too many minor injuries to list and was released later Saturday evening. Kirk on the other hand is still at Houston's trauma hospital (Memorial Herman) where he will be undergoing multiple surgeries. He suffered multiple lacerations, broke his jaw in multiple locations, broken leg, many broken teeth and again too many minor injuries to list.

It was a great day that came to a disasterous end. If there is a lesson to be learned from this it is to always where your entire harness! Always where your entire harness! I felt it was worth saying twice. Both Kirk and Dody only had on their lap belts and the injuries to their faces would have most likely been eliminated had they not hit the dash with their face. If you have one of those shifters that has the imitation lock to mimic the original, get rid of it, the cut that came from that nearly killed Kirk.

Have fun and be safe!

Our thoughts and prayers go out to Kirk and Dody. The car can be replaced, good friends are hard to come by. These cars are usually the "losers" in a bad accident. I always ware my harness even if it's a drive around the block. Thanks for the warning about the shifter. It sounds like broken bones are almost a givin when these cars are in accidents. Has anyone had a bad accident and not broke a bone?

Wow, glad they are gonig to pull through. I have never not worn the full harness and never have let anyone ride without wearing the entire setup. This is why... ouch, best wishes to their recover! Be Safe!

Full Harness

I am sorry to hear about this, I hope all goes well with the recoveries.

I swear by my Kirkey seat and the full harness. I was wearing it totally strapped when I hit a guard rail a while ago. The impact was sufficient to pull my tight fitting glasses right off my face. I cant imagine what would have happened if I did not have my gear all on.

I dont think that anyone should venture out without being totally strapped in, the difference in an accident is night and day.

Once again my best wishes to the injured parties.

I am glad your friends are alive. Thanks for taking the time to post and remind us it can happen to anyone. I can't imagine what you went through seeing and providing help after the accident - that must have been hard. Thinking of you all.

Jon,

Thanks for posting this, and glad that both Kirk and Dody will be okay. In reading the post I was confused how they hit their faces until you posted that they only had on their lap belts, very scary indeed.

Jon, I am glad your friends will be OK. Please give them my best and if there is anything I can do please let me know.

Terrible news. Thankfully they will be OK although it will be a long road to recovery. The lap belt doesn't do much as I found out last month when I was hit. Down the street and back without the harness, just the lap belt. I was hit at ~25 mph and it was a violent impact. I couldn't imagine being hit at twice that speed.

So sorry to hear this. Wishing them a speedy and complete recovery.

Regarding the lap belt only situation; many years ago there was an active discussion on here, or maybe even the old forum, about full harness vs. lap only. Someone (seems like it may have been John Phillips) summed it up well by saying something like "I looked around the cockpit and didn't see anything I wanted to hit my face with". That kind of spoke to me about always using the shoulder belts.

Again, my thoughts are with Kirk & Dody as they recover.

Jon,

I'm so sorry to hear about the accident and our thoughts and prayers are with Kirk and Dody in the hopes for a full and quick recovery.

This one post has me 'throwing my hat over the fence' about new Camlock belts with a sternum strap. They will be ordered this week.

Very Sad story. On a recent one hour trip my wife and I were scared to death by the number of horrible, clueless drivers. This is more worrisome when you are driving a very small car or bike. In fact,it was this recent trip and some close calls that got us to think about safety in this car and ask the question---Are our lives worth risking in this car??? It is only a matter of time before some innocent driver is killed in one of these small cars.

Thanks for the thoughts and prayers! It was amazing what was going through my head as I rolled to a stop directly in front of Kirks car. I tried to get as close to his car as I could with mine knowing I could drive to him faster than I could run and in the process I realized my wife had unbuckled and was standing in the seat beside me yelling get this thing stopped. As I stopped I could see the front of the car and that the engine was still mounted to the frame and said to myself "this is a good sign"

The car was backed down in a ditch where it stopped. It was a busy road. As I ran toward the car a man jumped out of his truck and yelled he was calling 911. I could not see Dody as I was coming to the car but I could see Kirks head leaned on the back deck of the car in a manner that was not natural and I thought his neck was broken. There was blood all over his face, shirt and white upolstery in the car.

When I got to the car, Kirk was out cold, snoring an gurguling blood from his mouth. I carefuly straightened his neck and tilted it forward to ease the blood flow out of his mouth. The snoring told me he was breathing but it took a few seconds to figure out the blood was coming from his mouth and not from internal, which I thought at the time he had bitten his tongue. I found out at the hospital that the bones in his jaw had torn through to the inside of his mouth.

In the meantime I looked down at Dody who was laying with head in front of the shifter partially under the dash and she moved enough for me to see she as awake. Her and I spoke as my wife got rags and stuff to prop them up. Dody reached up and turned the key off on the car which told me she was thinking and I felt a little better.

Kirk woke up after about 4 minutes and we started to talk and he wanted to know how his wife was. I asked if he felt ok and he said I don't think so. He was holding his head up on his own so I began to look over his body for cuts, breaks etc and did not see anything severe enough to be terrribly concerned. I did not know the seriousness of the cut on his forearm from the shifter. It had missed the main arteries by a distance that was so small it could not be measured.

I turned toward the street to see the other couple with us talking to the occupants of the other car, I had been completely oblivous to them until this point. I could go on and on, to make a long story short, I was scared to death and just reacting. It was extremely difficult to drive after the ambulance left. I was shaking so bad that slipping the clutch was a serious chore.

Thanks for all of the thoughts and prayers. They are both strong so they will be fine, it will just be a long road to recovery. Kirk is already planning his next car, starting with a 5 point harness like he uses in his race cars and viper.

Sorry to hear of this but thanks for posting. Hopefully now I can convince my wife to ALWAYS use the full harness. I'm sure a lot of folks will be helped by this. I hope for a full and speedy recovery for all.
WOW-That was some impact on the steering wheel. The accident could have turned out a lot worse.

Also, I was thinking of getting one of those shifters. Not now.

My thoughts and prayers are with them both for a full and speedy recovery. I am glad the prognosis is good.

Honestly, the pictures do not look as bad as I expected. Yes, the full harness would have saved them much grief - just look at how the steering wheel is bent - gives you an idea of the forces, all from his chest.

What make of c0bra do they have? What kind of car hit them? Glad you were driving well and add to the accident.

Wow, thanks for sharing, and I hope your friends recover soon...

I gotta admit that I have only been using my lap belt... and the quote about looking at the interior and not seeing anything you'd want to smash your face against is going thru my head...

When I installed my 2 piece dash several weeks ago.. I thought about stuff like, although I get to access my gauges from the back now... there's now a slicing instrument I just added to my car....

I don't wear my 5 point, because I don't like being restricted from movement... so was considering installing a regular 3 point belt with the retracter... so I can move around, yet be secure when an accident occures... and I didn't like the time involved with my old style latch belt...

I already broke a Ralt RT-40 in half - broke both of my legs, 4 toes, scrambled my brain a bit and tore muscles in my neck in 1991.... amazing how quickly we forget tough, painful lessons.... I appreciate this being shared... I think I'll do the right thing now...

So... I'll install a modern 3 point, or upgrade to a cam-loc style 5 point, so I can at least buckle up faster....

Once again... my thoughts are with your friends... I hope they recover well...

Judging from the pic of the bent tube and the location of the tabs for the LCAs, looks like a FFR.
