What do you think of the Scion XB?

Well, I totalled my daily driver yesterday, a 1998 Ford Escort with 160,000 miles. I'm thinking about purchasing a 2005 Scion XB with all sorts of goodies. All feedback is welcomed.

Let's hear it! How did you total it? We told you Escorts are not good for drifting!

I guess your OK, so that's a good thing.

Well, if you must know, I was heading home on a 4-lane city road when a lady in a Mercedes station wagon made a right turn onto the road I was on and then moved into the left lane. Well, there was a Mercedes sedan there and I was in back of her. The two Mercedes hit each other and then I plowed into the rear of the sedan. If my car were a dog, it would be a pug.

Ping Jeff Walker, Cobra99. He has one and likes it a lot.

Yep, I'm OK. Just pissed at the lady for going into my lane and causing all this crap. The lady in the Mercedes sedan was really shaken up. She was pretty hot looking too!!

I wanted to console her, but...

One word...ButtFrigginUgly! But I won't be driving it...so whatever flips your skirt!

Bill,

Glad to hear that you're ok. A two-car garage with a GT-40 on one side and a XB on the other? Are you sure that the sudden stop didn't scramble your eggs a wee bit? ;)

Actually, I like it as well. Here's a pic of Scion's new T2B from the NY Auto Show. Unsure if it is merely a concept car or if they plan on producing it, as I found it in the "NY Debuts" section of the website. Looks like an evil milk delivery truck:

Scions are good cars, and as you probably known Scion is owned by Toyota. Very good quality, one my friends was jsut given a Scion tC, you might want to look at those. They are a little more pricey than the xB, but they are much better looking and can be pretty quick if you add the supercharger option.

Bill,
Happy to hear your OK, you got to watch for those old ladies in MB doing 4 wheel drifts thru the turns.

As far as the Scion I liked them when the came out but I am yet to see on that does anything for me.
As far as reliability... made by Honda, what else need be said

What about another Cobra with a SB and a hard top? 20+MPG, great looking, great performance, need I go on?

Stay safe

I have had my xB for about 8 months now. (mine is an automatic). A lot of people find them to be very ugly but I like the design a bunch. My mother calls it a, "milk truck". Things I like a bunch about the car:

Extremely roomy, especially if you're tall.
30-33 mpg
terrific stereo
Toyota reliability
lots of standard options - power everything, tinted glass
good storage - back seats fold down giving plenty of room
I really like the seats - very supportive and upright
The riding position is good - feels like you're sitting high
comfortably seats 4 large adults - no problem at all
EASY to park about anywhere

About the only thing that bothers me sometimes is fairly major, depending on how you drive. Passing power is pretty limited. If you drive in mostly urban areas, it's not a problem at all - great car around the city. When we moved to Dallas is when the 110 hp became very evident because my 30 mile commute is mostly highway. It's not too bad but you have to plan your intentions to pass and merge with traffic. Once you're cruising along at 60mph+, it's not a problem.

Ohh, the other good thing that I'm starting to notice is that the resale value on these appears like it's going to be really good. The roominess of the car and above-average fuel economy make me like it more and more every day.

I recommend.

108 HP and butt-fugly. Eeeeewwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww. My brother-in-law is a firefighter and said they don't hold up well in accidents.

Glad to hear you are OK. Heck, I'd look at the accident this way. A blessing in disguise. I mean, a FORD ESCORT w/ 160k miles. No offense, but that's not exactly what I'd call a cool car.

As far as the Scion's go, ehhhhh they are geared more for teenagers, if you want a cool little car that's not too expensive for a daily driver, I'd look at a Mazda 3, or maybe even the Solstice coming out.

Scion's are made by Toyota, not Honda

Three questions:

1 - As a Cobra owner, why would you even consider it?

2 - How old are you?

3 - Have you seen question #1?

If practicality with multiple seats is your goal, then buy a good used SUV and save the ton of money you didn't spend to buy the Scion for a repairs/maintenance/gas fund.

Wow Bill... glad you're OK... also glad it wasn't another curb! :D

As for the Scion, I think they are real ugly!! If you're going to get a daily driver, and spend a lot of time in it, get whatever is most comfortable for you. Decide what is most important for you... gas mileage, payments, ease of getting in/out, cargo carrying etc. Either way, you've got a COBRA and/or GT-40 in your garage, so... it really doesn't matter what everyone else thinks about your car! ;)

I would reccomend a different approach. Post the question, "what kind of car should I buy in the $15-20K range" (or whatever your range is) and you will see all kinds of positive input. Be sure to give your parameters. the more info we have, the better the reccomendations you will get.

To ask about a Scion on a Cobra board is just asking for trouble!

Glad you're OK. If I can help with the insurance end of it, don't hesitate to ask.

As for the Scion, don't know why people have anything against it. Yeah, it's underpowered (it's basically a rebodied Echo). But personally, as long as you don't put all the rice rocket stuff on it, it doesn't look bad. It's probably very practical, and I'm sure it's reliable. And affordable.

I forgot to give my unbiased opinion on the Scion in my earlier post.

Don't like them at all. This opinion is purely based on looks of the vehicle.
