Start with "She Wore a Yellow Ribbon" (great story, excellent scenery), move up to "The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance" (good cast, Lee marvin plays a great outlaw. The Duke calls Jimmy Stewart "Pilgrim" for the first time), then on to "The Good, The Bad and The Ugly" (just plain fun and somebody should straighten Lee Van Cleef's nose!), next watch "Siverado" (good 'modern' western) and, if you think you're ready, finish with "High Noon" (tops on anyone's "A" list).

A good time will be had by all, I guarantee it!

Really, there are too many good ones to list; El Dorado, Support Your Local Sheriff (this is a hoot with James Garner), and on and on...

For watching with the kids, add any of the Louis Lamour stories that have been made into movies. All of them are great and they are all "G" rated!

The last one I saw had Tom Selleck in it and it was great, as all of them I've seen are. You probably can't tell I'm a Louis Lamour fan, can you?

Good choices on the L'amore movies for the kidlets. They are very well done.
Some good Duke movies suitable for the younger ones are:
The Cowboys (mentioned)
Rio Bravo
Red River
The John Ford trilogy (She Wore a Yellow Ribbon, etc)
True Grit/Rooster Cogburn
The old Disney 'Davy Crockett' movies are good too.

My favorites (definitely not all kid shows)
Lonesome Dove
The Mag. Seven
Josey Wales
The Unforgiven
The Wild Bunch
Any John Wayne movie
How The West Was Won
7 Mules For Sister Sara (great 'spaghetti-ish' Eastwood picture)
The Long Riders

Man I love Westerns. :D

I liked "Look Who's Sucking, Two" . . . oh, I thought you meant the movies that you buy from "Best Western" motels. My bad, how embarrasing

The quintessential western movie, "The Searchers."

Monument Valley, Big Sky, John Wayne, Ward Bond, even has Natalie Wood in it. It ends with John Wayne doing his John Wayne walk.

Good call Don. The Searchers has been described as not just the perfect Western, but perhaps the most perfect movie ever made.

Plus it gave Buddy Holly the idea for one of the greatest R&R songs ever. 10 Points to anyone who guesses.

Darn Mike, lhall beat me to it.
Yep, it IS a line out of the movie. Spoken by The Duke in a style only he could make work.

One of the best college courses I ever took was called, "American Hero." We studied movies such as, The Searchers, Jerimiah Johnson etc., I even had to do a book report on a Louis Lamour novel of my choice. It was a nice break from Linear Algebra and Diffy Q. :D

Along the same line, did you guys see the two hour History Channel show on Jedediah Smith? Really well done. Don't miss it if it's on again.

Ding, ding! 10 points to Ihall.

Don I don't have cable so I didn't see that show. I did once see a show about Jebidiah Springfield though. :D

dv, I'm just gonna pretend you didn't say that. ;)

Finding a western that young folks will enjoy has gotten more difficult over the years. And most kids in that 10-12 range are not interested in black and whites.

If you can find a copy of "Rustlers Rhapsody", starring Tom Berringer, I bet all three of you would love it.

It's a comedy western, but not like the 3 stooges. It's a parady of all the old singing cowboy westerns. When my son was little, he knew all the lines by heart. We wore the tape out and had to buy another one.

Thanks, I try. I still get a laugh when I go back and read my post. A dirty mind is a terrible thing to waste
