Wheel Studs

I've gone thru 6 pages of search results and only found one comment relative to my question.

I need to know how many threads of the wheel studs should be engaged into the nuts.

On the rear, with all nuts properly tightened, when I remove one nut, then re-thread it on, I count 5 threads before the nut contacts the wheel. On the front, using the same procedure, I stopped counting after 10 threads into the nut.

Does anyone have a link to identify what is a safe minimum?

Thanks,
Todd

Normal mechanical practice on a stud/flange/nut, where the wheel in this case is the flange, is that the stud should be at least flush with the outer face of the nut. It is preferred that there should be 3-5 threads protruding past the nut.
In the case of a solid face nut, good mechanical practice dictates >1x the stud diameter of thread engagement between stud and nut, with 1.5x being preferred. Since the threads are 1/2-20, that means 1/2" of engagement = 10 threads.

5 threads is too few and you only have 1/4" of thread engagement. I would check your stud length vs. wheel flange thickness.

The Navy made a "Reader's Digest Condensed Version" of ANSI/ASME specs related to mechanical fasteners. You can download it here: NSTM Ch. 075

For full strength the nut threads need to be fully engaged. You won't find a simpler answer as there is no other set number for thread engagement. It depends on the particular nut and it's application. In some very low load applications you can have a few as one or two, but lug nuts are loaded in tension, requiring full engagement.

NHRA rules require engagement equal to the stud diameter. IHRA requires the stud fully engage the nut ON STOCK WHEELS AND LUG NUTS. Long studs and open nuts allow for easy inspection and comply with all rules.

Personally, I would have no less than 100% of the nut engaged. Install longer studs if necessary. My $.02.

I have some wheel studs that I will not be using. Let me measure them. If they work for you, you can have them for shipping cost

These are 2" from the end of the stud to the rim where it seats. Not sure if it helps

Hey Steve, thank you for the offer. I have another issue with the rear that I need to resolve first so it may be a while before I get back to you on this.

Thanks again,
Todd
