I was going to pick up a 91' Mustang this weekend to use as a donor but it currently has a salvage title. Just really looking to pull the wiring, rear-end and motor for the build.

It dawned on me there might be an issue insofar as being able to transfer title cleanly and whether or not it has to pass smog etc.

I don't know if the tags are current, guess I need to check on that but assuming they are...

does the car have to be running in order to transfer the title?

can it be put directly into non-op status?

does a new smog test need to be done? heard there was some new req that the current owner has to smog the vehicle before sale, is this true?

any other issues you guys might be aware of re: using a salvage title vehicle...

thanks!!!

Ivan, I went through that with mine. I tried twice to transfer the title to my name. First at Auto Club and once at DMV. I ended up sending Julie back down to the DMV and she managed to sweet talk someone there to transfer the title to me and non-op it. Just explain to them that your not looking to put it back on the road and your just using it for parts. It can be done but it's not necessary. I talked with my CHP inspector and he told me that he would have accepted the pink slip with the previous owners name on it with the transfer signature on the back and a bill of sale. He told me he just looks to make sure none of the parts are reported stolen. If you try to in fact register it it will need a smog cert. Hope this helps. Frank

not necessary to register it or even transfer it to your name, just take it apart, save the parts you need, sell the parts you do not need, cut it in little pieces, call the towing company, make a copy of the title, give the copy to the scrapper (some times they won't even ask you for the title), but definately keep the original to prove where the parts came from when you go to the CHP. done this a few times myself.

Well, here's the update to this story...

Went ahead and picked up the donor (thanks to good 'ol Frankeeski) who let me borrow his trailer. Thanks Frank

A high school/college buddy of mine came over with his friend and we pulled the engine and trans. We used to work on our Mustangs years ago....here we are again almost 20 years later doin it all over again.

Took awhile to get the time to tear it down and get it out of the driveway but it was kinda fun.

I had called a local yard a couple of weeks ago and they told me I needed a junk certificate to dispose of the body so I went to the DMV this week to get it. DMV took the old title and transferred title to me automatically as part of the process and I didn't have to pay any fees.

I suppose I could have just called someone to take it away but then I wouldn't get the chance to beat up on the body and use the Sawzall and that just seems to be part of the ritual. :smash:

Finished chopping it up this weekend to get the eyesore out of the front driveway! Now have some parts cleaning to do. The fun continues....

pictured...Frankeeski, my hs bud Martin who hopes to build a coupe or roadster someday (currently has an '89 vert he wants to get running again, and his bud Sergio (another crazy Cuban). Sergio was nice enough to loan us the engine hoist and came over to lend a hand. He wants to build a Rat Rod so I gave him the auto trans from the donor. It was the least I could do...oh yeah and provide the food and beer!
