No Mk4 yet. MkI's were up until about FFR3200. Lots of frames were delivered with some of the Mk2 changes but not all of them. Mine was one of the in between ones. Not sure when the MkIII's came out as far as build number. Lots of frame changes between the three, the most obvious being a backbone added to the Mk2's and side impact tubing added to the Mk3's.

Jeff has given you the manufacturing sequence of the 3 models. As far as telling them apart without looking at the serial numbers, it is hard to do so from the outside, ie just from the body if it has been painted. However, there were lots of changes made between Mk I and II and between Mk II and III.

I dont have a Mk I so others will chime in as far as differences with the Mk II. As an example though, the inside of the doors is different with the Mk I. Also, as Jeff mentioned, the Mk I had no backbone down the center in the cockpit where the tranny is formed, although the aluminum pretty much bolted up the same way and hides this.

The Mk III changes were substantial. Most of the changes were done to widen the engine bay to allow room to fit the 4.6 modular motor which is much wider than the 5 litre. The footboxes are different, and the steering shaft exits the front of the footbox rather than the side. I believe the Mk III also has some frame stiffening done. Also, the rear part of the frame and body is different on the Mk III, allowing 315 size tires without modification to the frame. The bodies themselves are different, they come in a black gel-coat and supposedly require much less work to prep than the Mk II. The hood is different too, it has an integral hood hoop built into the inside and is much sturdier.

I'll leave it to others to point out other changes but that's a start for now.

The two easiest methods for the difference in the Mk I and Mk II , (in my opinion) would be (1)The shape of the upper brace in the trunk area...the MkI is straight across (flat) , and the MkII is curved with the shape of the back of the body.
The (2d) is the front upper "A" arms...The Mk II is adjustable , the Mk I is not.
The Mk II has a diagonal brace on the left side of the drivers footbox , and the bracing on the MkI , and Mk III , do not....The Mk III also has Tow-hook holes in the front of the 4" frame tubes , neither of the other two have this.....There are many other differences , but these are the easiest to spot for people not familiar with the three cars. (IMHO , of course).

I don't want to get into a semantical diatribe, but I don't think there ever was a Mark 1.

Back then they were called Factory Five Cobras. Then, we started calling them Factory Five Roadsters.

Only after they came out with a Mark 2 was there any reference to a Mk 1. Prior to that, I'd never heard of a Mark-anything!

So there never was a Mk1.

MkI is only being used here to identify the first series of FFRs...Otherwise , it would be clumsy to diffentiate between the three series....
I'm sure , when the Smiths came out with the first FFR , they didn't dream that more than 6000 roadsters would be produced....anyway , you are correct....it was not a MkI, it was a Factory Five Cobra , until they agreed not to use the word "Cobra".

Exactly, talk about plucking your money down on a company that had built less than 300 cars in what 2, 3 years?
