AC Compressor Location ?

I've noticed in some photos, the AC compressor is installed on the lower right(passenger)side of the engine. Others have opted for a location on the left(driver's)side head. The instructions I have, indicate a left head installation, however, I would prefer the passenger side, for hose routing.
Is this a matter of choice, or the difference between the 302 and 351? Being new to small blocks, I thought they were the same base configuration.

I installed mine on the lower right side of the engine, the standard brackets that come with most A/C kits are set up for upper left side.
It is a little more work to move the compressor to the other side but the result is generally shorter hoses and a cleaner looking install.
302 or 351 makes no difference as most aftermarket kits bolt the compressor to the cylinder head. HTH.

mannyjoe,
could you post some additional info regarding this? I'm curious: did you have to alter the mounting bracket to have the compressor on the passenger side?

I used the A/C unit from Richard Oben, I redrilled a few holes on the supplied compressor mount, added a bracket and had a local company make up the aluminum hard lines. I think the hard lines give it a more professional look, but really not necessary.
If you want I can take some pictures and post them tonight or tomorrow. HTH.

MannyJoe,

Thanks, I also have Richard's AC kit. I thought I might be able to redrill the holes in the supplied bracket to move the compressor to the passenger side.

I'm really curious about which AC unit to buy. Is it a preference issue? Ease of install. I have an Italian car with terrible and probematical AC and seek a solid reliable system.

Also I understand some intrude into the passinger footwell. The piece Quality sells is made for the raodster but can be made to fit the Coupe. Anyone here done that?

Looking forward to the pics, Joe.

Thank you.

Brian,
I think I'm Chris' (Quality Roadsters) first customer trying to fit the roadster kit into the coupe. it's been a lot of work, but it's a very nice kit, and Chris has been a pleasure to work with.

the main unit is mounted, and while it wasn't the simplest thing, it hasn't been all that big of a deal. my Dad machined a bracket for it to sit on the 2x2" beam squished by some "L" brackets & then tied to the 1x1" tubes that run along the dash & firewall to secure it in place. (I had already bent up some aluminum "Z" channels that would have secured it been 99% as effectively but not nearly as pretty...) anyhoo, fit wise the only problem is mounting the unit itself on the 2x2" - there is plenty of room for the unit....

pm me for my phone number if you want to chat some more about it...

I have the FFR (Vintage Air) unit. I haven't tried it yet, but it is all installed. I barely intrudes on the passenger area. you can see it on the far right of this picture (the plastic case extending below the dash by about 1":

I have used Vintage Air in several other projects and it worked very well, although none of them had the lack of insulation and "drafty" firewalls that this one has.
