I have a shifter lever that is 1/2 inch in diameter. I want to reshape it from the dotted line to match the pieced together picture. It is forged mild steel and heat treated. If I get it hot enough will it bend or should I cut and weld it? In my thinking the problem could be that it is forged and heat treated. Jmamble

I'm no expert but have heated and bent alot of stuff like that over the years. Guys have been doing the same to steering arms and front axles since the beginnings of hot rodding so I think you'd be safe doing it to a pretty much non critical part like that.

I have a shifter handle that I heated and bent for use on my 68 Barracuda. The bend is just above the two mounting holes where it will see more stress than where you plan to bend yours. It has been on the car for over 20 years and close to 100,000 miles with no issues.
