Well, I installed my new hard drive, Windows ME install went OK till I got to the point of Product key number. When I got my PC I insisted on getting a copy of the os, problem is I can't find the product key code in my paper work or in my computer. It must be on the old harddrive somewhere(?). I would appreciate a little navigation help to retrieve it and enter it on the new hard drive.

Thanks in advance.

ARRRRRGHHHHH!

I don't think you can get the product key from the install or off the hard drive...it's a security issue.

Shoot, did the CD come with a case? If so check the back, it should have an orange tag with the product key. Let me know what you find. Worst case scenario you could call the Microsoft help line and explain the situation.

I knew this operation would turn to crap in short order. OK, any idea of who to call. I called the place I bought the computer from but they said they don't have a record of it. Meanwhile my wife is turning the house upside down looking for ANYTHING that might have the number, kind of like looking for the dead sea scrolls.

Thanks for the reply,
Matt

Yeah, it's a myth about the blank key...the only ones that respond to that are counterfeit.

Ok, your disk will have come in a paper or cardboard sleeve, or a disk case. Either one should have the orange sticker with the key. That is standard. If you find the case I'm sure the key will be on it.

I would call the Microsoft help line, unfortunately I don't know the number...sheesh, you'd think I'd know. I can try and see what I can find out at work tomorrow. Sounds like just a small hiccup...we'll get er fixed.

I have a pile of unused Windows M(censored) Edition if you want one of them.

If you paid for Windows ME there should be a COA or sticker on the computer case. If there isn't..and you paid for it...well.......

Drop me an e-mail and I'll send you one for free.

I'd highly recommend picking up Windows XP - it's much, much better.

Regards,

Bill

What can I say? You guys are the best.

I'm really glad you got hooked up. This is great! Remember to set your system restore points and hopefully it will WORK in the future
