Man did I ever burn the inside of my left ankle getting out of 3839 the other day, may need medical attention. But thats what I get for not wearing shoes & socks but then again this phoenix and it's 110 degrees, I've also burnt the inside of my right leg on the pipes of my Fat Boy, but there again I was wearing shorts. Has this happened to anyone else but me?

You have to be kidding. You're not really a true Cobra owner UNTIL you burn something on the sidepipes. That little bit of roasted flesh is an offering to the gods of speed and power. Now your car will be faster than ever, so will you cycle.

Yep. Been there, done that, and don't even have mine running yet. I was a passenger and got my right leg bitten. I guess that's how you can tell the difference between drivers and passengers :D .

Seriously, we ought to all make sure that passengers are reminded as getting out of the vehicle, or standing next to it admiring the beautiful engine. Many passengers are newbes.

Every person i have taken in my cobra burns themselves getting out.. one guy swung his body to the right.. put both legs down.. stood up and had both back of his ankles agains the pipes... 3rd degree burns.. and the baby went to the doctors...

But... i have always said i wanna put cobra emblems down my pipes so when people get burned they get the kung-fu tattoo:)

somewhat sad tale: I've got a set of finishline stainless shields on my pipes (after seeing pictures of Mikiec's wife's ankle on the forum, my wife insisted). At Knotts this year someone came up with a little one in their arms asking about where and how much. The little girl had 2nd degree burn on her leg from a brush against dad's pipes. Thank goodness it was a brush only. I know they don't look as "cool" as a bare pipe, but I can reach down right after shutting down after a 30 mile hard run and put my hand flat against the shield. They are safe. - right up there with with my high back seats, and the high FFR rollbar.

Just a thought here...

Would it be possible to sew up a piece of nomex about the width of the door and attach it to the door sill or floor in the cockpit. After opening the door, toss the unattached end of the nomex out the door, so it hangs over the side pipe. Could even shut the door with the nomex still hanging over the pipes until they have a chance to cool down. When driving, the nomex would just be tucked between the seats and the door sills.

The ceramic coating on my sidepipes keeps the heat lower. It is still hot as hell, but I don't think it would cause the third degree burns shown in the photo above. Maybe I'm wrong, and I know if my wife were to wear nylon hose, I'd probably have to scrape the melted plastic from her leg.

he he he.... initation.

most of us taller drivers just stand up and exit the car by stepping over the doors. no need to open the door and plant your legs by the notorious "fangs". as i tell most passengers/drivers of my car; "you wear this car rather than sit in it. just climb in an out of it like a shoe."

Deja vu! My wife suggested the very same thing, after THRAMP bit her.

I haven't been bitten...yet.

Drive on!

For some reason, I have never been bitten. I am not careful getting out. I guess it's just the geometry of my body getting out of the thing. The wife got bit hard the first time we went out and my 6 year old got a slight bite one of the first times he got out by himself (I've been lifting him out of the seat for 3 years previous).

I put on heat shields after my daughter burnt her leg (not as bad as the picture above).

Even with them, I tell people to wear long pants and long socks (no anklet types).

I find it especially difficult to help elderly persons into and out of the car due to the hot pipes issue.

I may try that idea of having a leather flap available to cover it.

Solid Stainless Steel Heat Shields will take the bite out of your sidepipes. $135 uncoated $185 Ceramic coated silver or black. The footboxes get warm enough without having to wear boots or long pants. E-mail me at: m49francuck@hotmail.com Mike
