Adding posi to 8.8 open ?

I just bought an 8.8 rear that was supposed to have been a posi 3.55. Well, it was pouring rain when I met the guy and I took his word for it. Well, I just unloaded it and it is a 3.55 but no posi. How expensive is adding it and what unit would you recommend (providing I can't get my money back?) Thanks Mike in Maine

What kind of vehicle did the 8.8 come out of Mike? I thought all of the Mustang 8.8s were traction lock. I'd try to make sure it's the right length and has the correct brackets before you invested any more $$ into it. If it is the correct housing, I've got a traction lock assembly that I'm bringing to the Open House next Saturday. Was planning on donating it to the auction. Needs rebuilding, clutches are gone. Rebuild kits are around $50.

There were lots of FOX bodied cars that used the 8.8, and many did not have trac-loc. They all have the same housing width and almost all have the same generic brackets. Does yours have duad shock mounts? Did you open it up? How did you determine it's not a locker?

just got back... it has the quad shock mounts and when I pulled the cover it has just the pin in the center section... no S spring etc. When you spin one wheel the other turns the opposite direction. I guess it's an open from that. I bought it rather than rebuild the 8.8 I got with the donor that came with 4.10s in it. Thansk for any advice! Mike in Maine

It also is the same dimensions, backing plate to backing plate as the rear that I do have. Does adding a replacement posi carrier require any special tools etc? Thanks Mike

I've really liked the Lock Right locker from PowerTrax when used in 9" Ford applications for road racing.

PowerTrax web page

They are Locker units that replace the spider gears and side gears of a normally "open" differential like yours. They are not cheap, but you do not have to remove the carrier/gears from the differential to install (saves you set-up charges) and I have never heard of one failing.

They also have an axle identification chart that shows the gaskets and measurements to be sure you have an 8.8 rather than a 7.5.
