Has anyone done this?? My 4.6 is dying and would much rather go to a 347 stroker.

Staying with EFI or going to carb?

Just curious what is killing your 4.6 -- can you tell us how/why it's dying?

(EDIT: I also dumped a 4.6 build after the engine gave up due to oil starvation. Unfortunately, I can't help you with too many details, as I went with a real oddball combination afterwards -- see signature below. Like the guys point out, almost no matter what you do, plan on another transmission. That was the single biggest cost of my rebuild, actually -- even more than a brand new stand-alone ECU and two new turbochargers...)

Cheers, John

This is exactly what I did, although I was still in the go kart phase. How far along are you?

Although a lot of the work is "simplification", there is still quite a bit to be done. Here's all that I did:
- Motor
- Transmission (as mn12 pointed out, the bellhousing is different, and I chose to replace the transmission too)
- Driveshaft (if you're replacing the transmission)
- Fuel tank, or at least tank pickup (I went from stock Mustang 4.6 EFI pump in tank to mechanical pump with different feed point)
- Fuel plumbing (I went from full return system to returnless - mech pump - plus the feed point at the engine changes)
- Wiring (huge simplification here)
- Radiator and cooling fan. The 4.6 radiator has different plumbing, and the fan is controlled by the ECU. I could have adapted what I had to work, but since I had all the complete kit parts at hand I elected to replace.
- Footbox side panel. Don't need to do this but if you have the SBF panel handy it does give you back a couple of inches.

Thanks so much for the responses guys, much appreciated. A friend of mine who is an instructor at a local automotive tech college and myself drilled down an engine noise to a single combustion chamber and he feels it's piston slap which would need a complete rebuild, the noise is clearly coming from the bottom end. I was frankly never happy with the carb'd set up as I could never get it it to run correctly and the power is just lacking. I had MKI with an EFI'd, rebuilt 302, E303 cam, with aluminum heads and it would run circles around my 4.6 carb'd MKIII which is just a dog in comparison.

I have no interest in rebuilding this engine and would rather sell the car as is, or switch to an EFI or carb'd 347. I'd prefer EFI if possible, carb's are just a pain and I'm not interested in keeping it period correct as the car has been made to look more contemporary (completely murdered out with the only shiny piece being the LeMans cap :) ).

The car is complete and 100% road worthy. I've taken off the body over the winter to add support panels which were not installed by the original owner so, although it's a pain, I understand it would be necessary for any major modification.

I'm prepared to make all mechanical changes, i.e. fuel tank, trans, etc to make this happen. The only other option I can consider is getting the engine rebuilt and then adding a supercharger.

That is alot of info in your reply, although some not too clear. Based on what you said get a 347, keep compression low for future boost, hi flowing heads and modern EFI system. Run that, then if you still need more power then add boost. That setup will make the addition of super charger or turbo easier because you will already have a good foundation for it.
