Can someone point me in the right direction regarding the SCCA and/or NASA requirement for having a steel floor? Does anyone have any pictures of this done? What gauge steel is needed?

Thanks

All the cobra challenge cars have an aluminum floor. Is it a new rule?

I'm not 100% sure - good point about the challenge cars. Hoping there is a rule guru that could alleviate any concerns about having to do this (because I don't want to if I don't have to)

From past track experience (mine and others), we now use diamond plate aluminum in the footbox.....Makes you feel a whole lot better when things fall off of other people's cars in front of you...Like drive shafts, rotors, u-joints, wheels, hoods, bumpers, etc....Ask me how I know....

Hi Karen,

I was just looking into sources for this. What thickness are you using?

Thanks, Eric

I recently installed new sheet metal in a car here in Vegas. The owner requested that the entire floor to be steel. So that's what we did. Wasn't necessary but the owner feels safe and that was the goal.

Build your floor pans and adjascent areas with what ever satifies your personal safety zone. On the GT, I used 16 gauge sheet steel on the foot box and fender well areas because I am thinking of projectiles entering in case of a collision. I didn't want to see the driver getting a tie rod end in the foot or knee and as Karen mentioned about other junk on te track coming up into te driver's compartment from the track. It happens all the time. My friend Ray answered a call on the Oakland bay bridge about an injury. A woman caught a piece of rebar off a truck, drove accross the bridge to call for help and when he got there, he and the 12 year old daughter watched her bleed out as there was nothng that could be done.
Build your foot box as strong as you want and then some.

I have the car at my house...maybe I can take pics this weekend.

It was my own car parts actually that tried to take my foot off. I went 2 off in a 100+ mph turn, hit the rumble strips at the exit and tore of my splitter off. Some of the 3/4 steel from the splitter tore up the footbox pretty good. Split it open like a tin can. Kind of scary. I also punctured a rear tire in the incident, that will be factored into the new splitter design, which incidentally has to be done by next weekend.

I dont believe there is any SCCA rule requiring steel floors. On our formula cars, if we are near the minimum weight, we use aluminum to save weight. If we are underweight, we use stainless steel, it is very heavy and adds weight as low as you can get it on a car, and it wont rust. But it is expensive. You can use regular steel to save money but it will rust. Steel will protect you better than aluminum from debris coming up through the floor.
