Coil over question

I have two long shocks and two short, which are front?

I have two large diameter coil springs and two smaller diameter, again, which are front?

I know the springs need to be of different rates for front and rear, but why are they not the same diameter since the shocks they go on are the same diameter?

The big springs go on the front with the shorter shocks. The smaller springs and longer shocks on the back. I scratched my head over that one too.
