Just one question...did you check ALL your bolts underneath the timing cover???

You might have missed one...

And that is proof that it can happen to anyone. Put in a new belt when I was getting the turbo done, waterpump bolt must have been loose, came out and got caught down by the crank pulley. Car ran fine, but I thought I heard a noise similar to a alt. belt, but totally different pitch. Couldn't locate it and forgot about it. did a run through third gear shifted to fourth some time later (couple days later) and car mysteriously started running funny. Jumped a couple teeth. Fortunately no damage to the motor that I can tell. Put a new belt on, checked the bolts and ran it, car is running great!

Check your bolts! ;)

Aye de mi!

At least you got away with it... the one downfall to interference engines- they're not terribly forgiving
