sn95 rearend, ffr upper, lower rear controlarms, will be gocarting in maybe a month. i'm still nervous about the wheelhop issue, some say install quadshocks to eliminate MOST wheelhop, others say autowelds , my car is not the mark2, delivered 12-8-01. the problem supposedly is the upper mount to the frame being to high, does anyone have a kit to lower the mounting point? should i make my own? 3 link sounds like a good idea, but i dont plan on racing.does ffr have a retrofit kit for their uppers on the old style frame, has anyone called them about it? also i do have the coilover option. i just need to get this part of the build behind me. thanks, vince

Vince, glad you brought this back up. When we did the online chat with FFR, I asked whether or not FFR could sell existing owners some of the Mark II upgrades at a special price. Specifically, the rear upper CA mounts. He said they could probably pull something together but would have to get someone at FFR to price it out. To my knowledge, we never heard anything else. It would probably be a case by case thing. I would prefer if FFR would just broadcast it to the board so that we all would have access to the special pricing, etc. Has anyone purchased or retrofitted any Mark II upgrades to an old chassis? Maybe someone should do a follow-up to the chat and see if we have some answers to this and other questions that were left open. An existing owner "upgrade special" would be really cool due to the recent introduction of the adjustable uppers, three-link, rumored hood hinge redesign, etc. However, IMHO the different rear upper CA mounts is almost a defect fix because of the wheelhop issue with older chassis. To FFR's defense, they do say it works fine without more than stock HP.

Vince,

The wheelhop is a result of the location of the instant angle of the rear control arms, the pinion angle and horsepower. With stock hp, a good set of quad shocks usually eliminates, or almost eliminates, wheelhop. However, the autowelds will eliminate wheelhop regardless of hp because the adjustable UCA's allow for setting the pinion angle plus the included bracket helps improve the location of the instant center. Unfortunately, the autowelds have a negative effect on the car's handling if one is capable of driving one's car near its limits of adhesion.

The installation of FFR's 3 link will circumvent any chance of wheelhop as well as eliminate the rollbind inherent in the mustang 4 link suspension. It's the way to go with the live axle cars.

All the best,
Bob

I have a stock HO motor. No horizontal shocks. aftermarket (ffr) upper and lower control arms. No wheel hop.
One other note that I have been thinking about is. I narrowed my own axle to put deep dish wheels on. To my surprise the stock axle was not straight, by a lot. So I straightened it. A friend of mine is building a model A and he put a 8.8 under it. He sent it to moser to be narrowed and they said that 8.8 are not true and they straightened it. His was out a ton. If 8.8 are not true will they do funny things under full throttle? I would think so but I don't have any proof?

Vince, ditto on what Bob said. You can build your own 3 link but be prepared for quite a bit of fabrication work (been there, almost done that).

A couple of other alternatives that are less work would be 1) set the pinion angle perfectly by shimming the tranny as needed or 2) fabricate or buy some tabs and weld them onto the existing upper frame mounts so that you lower the mounting point by 2.5". The latter idea is from an old, old and very long thread done by Gene Young in which he claims to have erradicated the wheel hop completely. This would be much simpler than fabbing a 3 link especially if you don't plan to race that much. I refuse to use those butt ugly quad shocks

Take care,

I didn't have much wheelhop with the 302, but when I went up a few notches (BAM!!!) it is very severe. I run the FFR uppers and lowers and Mustang springs and quad shocks.

Vince, fix it now! Either go with the three link and coilovers (recommended) or at least go with the autowelds. Its much easier than later.

Good Luck, Matt

quads should pretty much eliminate hop with a stock motor, or a mildly modded motor and street tires.

i dont have any hop with my 300ish RWHP IRS car now and sticky tires. when it was a 4 link, the quads made a HUGE difference.
