Gathering parts and info for my project. I'm using a carb'd 5.0, 5-speed, healthy motor, but not goofy. the car will be used on the street and occasional open track.

I'm leaning towards 3.55 or 3.73 gears for better acceleration, top end is not as critical.

What ratios areyour favorites?

I started with 3.55s. Had a gear whine, so I replaced them with a new set of 3.73s. (I'm also running a pretty healthy cam and I wanted a few more rpm when cruising in fifth gear. Engine was happier that way...
) Went with 3.73s and I like 'em better so far.

You will be happy with either 355's or 373's. 355's will leave you a little more room for more hp later on. We had 373's on 3070 with 365 crank hp and switched to 355's when we went crazy with the motor (440rwhp, 535 at the crank now).

Had 3.55's in the back of my stang. Moved up from 3.08's. woke the car up, better feeling, better acceleration. The 3.55's made 1st a bit on the short side and I think the 3.73's would make 1st really short. I vote for the 3.55's. They are a good mix where lower HP cars could use a bit more and moderate HP cars will like them better. Lets face it, although you say you arre going to aim for mid 300's for the HP, you will likely want more in the future and by installing 3.55's now means one less change at that time. Also, the 3.55's were great ont he highway, 2400rpm @ 70mph!

3.73's with a Healthy engine? First Gear is useless. 1.5 Seconds before shifting.

I'd take the 3.55's between the two but I'm running 3.27's. I wanted my car driveable on 250 mile trips without turning too many RPM's.

3:73 Yes 1st gear is quick, but it makes it easier to control HP.

I went from 2:73 to 3:55 and it was a really big difference for the better...added a powerdyne 6psi supercharger and wow..1st gear got short 2nd gears smokes the tires..3:73's would be too much I think. just my opinion though
