my motor: 302, bored 30 over, replacment flat top pistons, E-303 cam, Holley 174 Supercharager.

I am going to be doing heads this winter, and I am going to go with some AFR's. I can get some AFR 165's bolt them in and be fine, or i can get the AFR 185 and have to fly cut my pistons (something i do not want to do). Is there a notible difference between the two? Opinions?

thanks
Eric

Eric the 165's will match your intake and exhaust perfectly.

My impression of the two heads from numbers I have seen,,,,,,

Its sort of like the difference between the 4bl and 2bl cleveland heads. You only want the 4bl heads on a high reving, super highly built engine.

The 185s will THEORETICALLY flow more air. BUT, in a situation where you are not going to be reving 7000 on a highly tuned engine you might just go with the 165s. The 165s will give better flow at lower rpm and be more streetable. PLUS you dont have to cut the pistons.

I have flow numbers SOMEWHERE.

I read in MM&FF a back to back test of the heads on the same shortblock 306 with a slightly bigger than E cam, the 185's matched the 165's down low and made more power and torque in the upper range. On a stock cammed 302 the 165's are a good match.

From the flow numbers I've seen, the 165's will work well on up to a mild 351 so a hot 302 - 331 would be fine.
With your forced induction set-up you won't be winding it much passed 6000 will you?
On the upside Eric, if you decide later on you want to upgrade to the 185's I'll buy your 165's for my 306.

I thought I was bad....In that case I would leave this motor alone or maybe do a head job on the heads you have. I say this because at the rate your going your not going to be happy until your sit there with a 392 stroker or a BB. Why not wait till then and do a whole engine from top to bottom. Your only about 75 hp away from the max reliable hp you would want to run on a 302. Just a thought.

I'll try to dig up some articles that detail both, I went with the 165's after all my reading. FYI incase you go with the 185's do a search on corral.net i think there is a tool from isky that will allow you flycut yourself (if your bold) and better yet you can rent it.

The AFR185's flow better. The 165's will bolt onto a 302 with no modifications...not so the 185's. Why not have the best of both worlds and contact Ed Curtis at the corral. He sells 165's that are ported to the max, flow better than the 185's...I know, I have a set!! dino

You can reach Ed at Flowtech Induction...dept 5.0 P.O. Box 1205, Coventry,RI 02816 or phone 1-401-828-9302. And yes, these are the heads I was selling, but I wanted to sell the whole engine, not just the heads. Will I break 'em up??? Maybe. dino
