Defining best...

Strongest within reason...custom ford 9 inch and is easily compatible.

Strong enough, cheapest option ford 8.8 from mustang

strong enough and reasonable handling 8.8 with 3 link

best handling and totally strong enough for 302...IRS with alloy pumpkin

If you are talking gears, that's a whole 'nother story. For a street Roadster with a warmed over or stock 302, you'd be good with 3:55s or 3:73s, but you'll likely get 1000 answers on that one.

FWIW I'm starting with a normally aspirated 302, and chose to use a 3 link 8.8 with 3.55s. For me, "Best" was cheap, decent handling, good "scoot", less to worry about in the build. The FFR sale made going with 3 link an easy choice when I bought the kit.

Best for you could be very different tho!

Don't over think your build. Stay with the 8.8 mustang rear and use the gear ratio of choice. This will be more then strong enough for your stock or moded 302. The cars were designed to use mustang parts. Once you change from the original design cost and effort go up.
