When it comes to brakes I am a newbe, how easy is it to rebuild the rear caliper, or should I just buy remanufactured calipers?

Any advice, or special tools required would help.

The piston moves freely when compressed air is applied (40psi) but the dust boots are all torn up. I heard the rears are a PITA to rebuild, any one have any experience?

I rebuilt the two rear calipers off an '88 T-Bird T-Coupe. It can be tricky when reassembling the caliper - you gotta hold your tongue just right. I got it done using helpful instructions from another member. I'll email them to you. Hope the instructions help you make your decision.

As James said, rebuilding the rear calipers is anything but easy. Some of it can be tediously difficult, especially the spring on the caliper for the emergency brake which is an absolute PITA. It will take some time and a good deal of effort.

and a word of advice if you do choose to rebuild . . Tie down the spring on the caliper when removing and when reassembling. If you compress it, and it slips (which it will about 40 times) it will shoot. One of ours went straight up between my dad's head and my head, hitting the ceiling with ALOT of force and bouncing down onto one of the car windshields. A screw nearby shot about 30 feet into the wall.
