Hey Guys,

Well I finished the carpeting in my trunk today. It came out pretty well. It's the Black marine stuff from Home Depot. I also made a access panel for the battery and covered that as well. Here are a few pics...

Matt,

That looks great, thanks for posting the pics. I need to go buy the carpet for my trunk this weekend, so it was nice to see how nice yours came out.

Take care.

Looks good Matt, have you started the cockpit area?

Thanks for the pics, really nice job. I have been thinking of doing the same, including the battery access panel. If you have a minute to respond, what are the dimensions of the access panel and how far in from the left side, right side, front and back of the trunk floor panel for placement of the access panel????

Matt, that looks great! Did the carpet form easily over the corners? Did you have any problems with the adhesive sticking to the aluminum? Any tips?

Very, very nice. Looks identical to mine. I used the same material from HD. Cost me $18

Nicely done guys. Do either of you have templates? I'd like to do this to a finished car.

Looks good. I did the same, but left the side bare Aluminum and carpeted the floor only. I like the way the Al panel looks against the rails.

Either way, it really cleans up the appearance!

Todd-

Sorry, I don't have any templates. I used large sections of drafting paper when I made the original templates.

Are the sides seperate from the floor of the trunk or is it one big piece?

Looks Nice!, I used the same HD carpet in my trunk too. I made templates with large sheets of brown wrapping paper. I think it was easier than the interior carpet.

Todd, I used 2 old pizza boxes for a template to get the upper floor panel close, and then trimmed it from there. I have the template if you want it, it was pepperoni I think. The other pieces were just rough cut, and trimmed from there. The upper floor area would be a PITA on a completed car, but would really only take longer to do.

Bushidoman: If you look at your trunk, the battery should be mounted dead center between a set of parrallel 3/4 rails with rivets into them from the top side. I found the center and cut out a 12 inch access hole between the rails, with a cut off wheel. I then used a piano hinge on the back. I riveted on some support aluminum underneath each side. To seal the other three edges, I used strips of H/D velcro. After the floor was carpeted, I made up a cover for the hatch out of a scrap of carpet that was slightly larger than the opening.

Jeff King: I used 3M spray adhesive to glue the carpet down. It holds very strong and is pretty easy to work with. I sprayed the aluminun, and the back side of the carpet, waited a few minutes, then layed it down flat. It was cold in the garage, so I hit the carpet with a hair dryer to speed up the spray adhesive. It also held in the corners really well, better than I expected.

Bill3422: The upper floor and 4 inch vertical part is one piece. Lower floor and part near the latch is one piece. The others are just little triangles and curves glued on. I did the sides 1st, and then layed down the floor sections.

Hope this helps. If you like the idea and look of a carpeted trunk, I I say go for it.

Tony,

The trunk area carpet was actually the practice for the cockpit area. I wanted to see how the trunk came out before I jumped in and did the cockpit. My problem with the cockpit is that I have to make it look REALLY good to match the paint job that Ron is going to lay down for me!!!

Maybe I'll just get a beaded seat, or an indian blanket or something. :D

Stangs to Fangs, nice job on the carpet. Is that the same carpet that FFR sends with the kit? By the way, is that a DOT stop sign in the background? It’s illegal to have those in possession in MN. Good luck on the build.

A Cobra: Thanks, It's similar to what FFR uses, but not exact.

And yes that it a DOT Stop Sign in the background. It matches the State Police Cruiser in my driveway. ;)
