I have until Monday to decide if I want to buy these headers and sidepipes - they are on sale for $750. (normally they are $1,099)

Tri-State Motorsports

The problem is that my FFR 4x4 headers are just too loud for my liking. They are O.K. for short drives, but anything longer and I use ear plugs :(

Another option is that I could just buy the bullet muffler with tips from Tri State for $325. I could cut off the old mufflers and have these welded on.

Is the Tri-State system an exact fit??

Any comments or suggestions?

John, why do you have until Monday? Are they NOT going to be on sale anymore or is it something else?

I'm asking cause I'm planning on getting them, not just yet, but if they go on UN-sale, I might have to rethink. ;)

John, I have those very same headers and pipes and I am completely happy with them. They are considerably quieter than the stock FFR tubes, but they do get louder at higher RPMS. Mine fit very well, although now I see that the pass side tabs hould have been re-drilled about 1/2" further inboard, to better position the pipes, but I'm the only person who notices them. I paid $1100 delivered, and I consider that a screaming deal, $750 is a giveaway. IMHO.

Bart - From what I have heard, the Tri State pipes are quieter, but I do not know by how much. When I first got my Cobra on the road, a friend with a decibel meter meausure my stock FFR pipes at 95 db at idle and around 102 db while revving. I also understand that the FFR pipes get louder with age.

LuisO - They are on sale until the end of this month.

Greg - Thanks

John,

I just recently made the switch from the FFR J's and sidepipes to the TriStates 4 into 4. I really, really like them. Are they an exact fit? Well, I think that every FFR out there is a bit different. Especially how the sidepipe cutouts were done. I had to open the cutouts upward about a 1/2". Don't let that stop you from getting the system! You may not have to open your cut outs as much since you had the FFR 4 into 4's and they most likely fit different than the J pipe setup. It isn't difficult at all to enlarge the cutouts. I used 2" masking tape to protect the paint and simply cut and filed. (I used to own a business where we put sunroofs in new cars, so cutting shiny paint isn't new to me)

The exhaust has a nice rumble and burble at idle, screams when you wind the motor past 5000 rpm ( the best way that I can describe it is; sounds similar to the 'in car' camara sound of a Cup car) I will pull the gears every chance I get just to hear it! But...when you get out on the hwy to cruise, it shuts right up. Much, much more pleasant than the FFR glasspacks. Like I said I really, really like them.

Yes, the TriStates' system that I have has a bung on two of the header pipes. One on each side of the motor.

The system is made by KOOKS. Go to the KOOKS web site to learn more about KOOKS.

I believe the mufflers are a spiral design that you can pick up at most "track" speed shops for $50.00-60.00 each and then also get 3.5" turnouts. They go by the brand name Lobaks and most of the roundey round racers use them. I just put them on my car and its definitly better. Quieter and more efficent. Brian

How does the "Tri-State Custom Exhaust System (uncoated)" at $750 differ from "Custom Side Pipes" uncoated at $1099?

Fred has a good point - if you go to the Tri State Web Site, they have two different listings for these side pipes. I believe they are in fact the same - they just added the second listing (which is worded differently) so that you could order them online at the sale price

Cobraman - COOL, since I am looking to do a winter upgrade, I will probably wait until the end of October then.

While I'm at it, I am thinking of adding one of these air/fuel ratio monitors for my potato. Anybody use one? (there about $130 from Summit)

Brian,

Are the Lowbak's really as quiet as regular glass packs? I was told they are much louder due to the lack of fiberglass packing. There was a big discussion about them over on Clubcobra.com recently.

I have one question, the only thing about these pipes is that the opening at the end is angled towards the ground, can you make up a set that come out at 90 degrees in relation to the body?

Well, I got my new Tri-States pipes on a few days ago and I LOVE'M!! They are a bit quieter than the old FFR 4-into-1's, but a much better sound--no boominess at idle, the dreaded 70-MPH-2,000-RPM-in-5th drone is gone, replaced with a nice buzz and the rush of air! Quiet at cruise and neutral throttle, but get on the gas and it snarls a powerful roar. It's hard to describe, I think Olli has it about right:
