I am setup with my CMod car and very light aluminum trailer, car is 900lbs and trailer 600lbs. I would like to keep the tow vehicle as minimum as possible, I was originally going to use my '96 Deville or my buddy is selling a '97 LS 400 both seem to be able to handle towing less than 2000lbs. I picked everything up with borrowed full size pickups. My tow vehicle will serve as my dd and will only tow about 100 miles each way max a few times a month for AutoX. I am leaning away from truck because of gas mileage in my 40 mile mixed road commute each day.

My thoughts maybe Lexus 100k on clock, 2 wd small SUV or pickup and also have seen Volvo wagons.

Mileage is not great but the Lexus GX 470 would do the trick. They can be had for under $15k and are super nice.

If money is an issue and you don't care about luxury, then an older V8 Grand Cherokee might fit the bill. Probably find these under $5k.

Both get about 16-18 MPG and can pull a couple thousand pounds no problem.

I was listening to the Everyday Driver Podcast and this exact scenario came up. Surprisingly many of the bigger cars like Dodge Chargers have next to no tow rating but they ultimately decided on a Volvo station wagon. The Volvo S60 has a 3500lbs tow rating, gets 25+mpg and you can pick up a 1st gen ('00-'09) for like $3000!

If money is an issue and you don't care about luxury, then an older V8 Grand Cherokee might fit the bill. Probably find these under $5k.
True, can pick these up cheap now but gas mileage is HORRIBLE. I have an old 2007 Hemi Grand Cherokee that tows 7500lbs but it gets 14mpg. Might as well get a truck at that point.

The LS 400 would be my choice as they are pretty much bullet proof. The Volvo and Jeeps are among the most troublesome on the road as the miles roll up. -- Chuck

I'm an overkill guy. We also raced karts for about ten years. Every year more spare parts and tools were added to the trailer. Just leave yourself a little cushion. You can buy a lot of fuel for the cost of a trip to a body shop. Our tow vehicle was a F350 Crew Cab 4x4 with a gas V10. Towing a 6x10 enclosed trailer. Among others... It never broke a sweat.

I'm an overkill guy. We also raced karts for about ten years. Every year more spare parts and tools were added to the trailer. Just leave yourself a little cushion. You can buy a lot of fuel for the cost of a trip to a body shop. Our tow vehicle was a F350 Crew Cab 4x4 with a gas V10. Towing a 6x10 enclosed trailer. Among others... It never broke a sweat.

Then maybe an older straight 6 Grand Cherokee? Gets about 18 MPG, is easy to park in a parking lot/garage, pretty comfortable, and all your stuff is lockable at the track. You can even sleep in it with its fold flat floor. As to the "bunch of problems" comment...I have two of them. One has over 300,000 miles on it and is my daily driver. Still going strong. They were advanced for their time, but as far as todays standards go, they are darn easy to work on. I've done a radiator, and brakes, and wheel bearings, and sensors but, for the most part, it has been very reliable.

I just bought my second one and it cost me $1200.

The Honda Ridgeline works great for towing, and around 24-28 mpg on the highway.

It is rated for 5,000 lbs. Over 200k on it so far, no major problems.

I first started towing with a Toyota Tacoma 2wd 5sp, but going downhill, the trailer would try to push the car, and it was scary on occasion. I towed many years with an Explorer Sport Track which was a great compromise. Room, pick-up bed, four doors, V-6. But again, with heavier weights, it proved to be barely marginal. I now tow the Cobra with a F150, worry free, but terrible gas mileage!

While I commented on the poor gas mileage, I have to agree here. I've owned 2x Grand Cherokees (2000 w/ 4.7L and 2007 w/ 5.7L V8s). The first never gave me an issue before I got rid of it at 170K and my current has never needed anything but fluid changes and brakes at 140K.

Heck Joe, go for some style and substance! Back before SUVs and cushy pickups these were the tow vehicle of choice. Roomy, smooth, comfy, powerful and if it breaks you can fix it by the side of the road with duct tape and baling wire

I would consider a Subaru Outback for your circumstances. They are comfortable, reliable, all have AWD, new ones have 2700 lb towing capacity and are rated 26/32 mpg on reg gas. I don't know if you get much snow in PA. If so the AWD would be a plus for your commuting. They also have room for tools and stuff. A quick search show quite a few good low mile used ones available too.

Service the transmission if you haven't and use your Caddy. Minimalistic enough?
