was wondering if I could get some rough estimates on total hours it will take for the "whole ball of wax". From intitial body work to final clearcoat and buff.

I have zero experience with painting. One of my patients who is very good at body work said he would help me out. 30 bucks per hour. Just trying to get an estimate on what that will run me.

For a complete rookie like myself I wnet from a pre-mk2 body raw from FFR to a sealed primed body in about 2 months. Not working every day but you get the point.

On a good note this is not a bad thing as the different agents used can cure. I first did the seams with the 3-m products. This took about 8 hours total.

let body sit outside in the sun all week

Following weekend started the Rage gold work anf other items like rouding over all the edges and the like. Took all weekend 9 hours per day with lots of breaks as it was mid July heat.

Let everything sit all week in the sun

In two weeks had the entire body sanded, washed and ready for paint...

Placed the body on the car for door, hood, and trunk fitting. Got it registered and took the rest of the summer of to play with new toy.

Inbetween playing I fitted and completed the doors and decided to forgo the FFR hood and scoop for the Tri-states.

Took everything off the car after mounting all accessories like like lights bezels and the like (anything that needed to be on the finished car was first put on prior to painting.)

Took everything apart and body back on buck. Cleaned it off with comet and rough 3-m pads then prep solvent.

final Rage and a little of some stuff called Icing. Then started the feather fill process. Took about 40 hours for me to get the car straight due to inexperience. I sanded more off than I put on I think.

Then a realization that I was not a good painter and I found someone to take over. Primer and sealer are on and paint is to be bought this week.. And I still can't pin down the color!

so a time frame is tough to say but again you get the idea..

Don't rush. Even if your going to a pro it shoud take 5-6 weeks to allow for proper curing from start to finish..

I would take advantage of the offer. He can do the more technical parts (grind and fill)and you can do the grunt work (sanding and sanding). I have about 60 hours in the seams and body and I have very little expierence with body work.

Agreed I've got my seams mostly done with about 30 hours of work, and I think I'll need another 70 at least to get the rest of the car done, so as a newbie I'd say at least 100 and by the time you actually learn how to paint and do it, up to 200.

It's not as bad as it sounds, it's just a learning experience.

I'm thinking of letting the school for the deaf
do it. They are suppose to have a good paint program. I'm told they do a good job and I'm on a
budget. I'm going to autocross it and I don't
necessarily need a show job- I'm going to mess it
up anyways. Back to the question.
