Ok, the time has come for heads and a cam for FFR2401. Equipment will be going on to my donor 302 short block running, currently running Performer RPM intake and a 600cfm carb, 1.7 ratio lifters on to a stock long block.
I have no problem with buying new rockers or a carb of needed... Just looking for a what worked for me....
one option I would like to stay away from is fly cutting the pistons....

Thanks

Jeff-

I am very happy with the performance of my engine which is similar to yours. I have a 302, freshened .030 over bottom end with stock crank and forged pistons, Edel Performer heads, Performer intake, E303 cam, 1.72 rockers, and an edelbrock 600 cfm carb. My dyno guy was very happy with how this combo worked. We got 291 HP at the rear wheels and an estimated 360 hp at the crank.

You already got an Ebrock intake why not match it up to a Performer rpm head than you will have a balanced engineered setup my 2cents worth e or f cam youd be great'''or the cam for performer rpm setup.

Jeff,
The very first ad in the "Parts for sale" section has the heads you need.
At a great price, by the way.

Heres my setup and advice

AFR 165 cc, RPM performer intake, 670 street avenger carb, FMS 1.6 rockers, and f cam.

Now then my engine has not ran yet so I cant tell you about performance. I've read several post in the past and bottom line I say...take this to the Ask Gordon Thread.

I can send you several links to 400hp 302 reviews, but you'll still ask the same questions that someone like Gordon will answer. BTW I dont think gordon likes AFR's I went my own route.

Jeff...you need heads with a 1.90 inch intake valve UNLESS you plan on notching the piston. I called AFR about the 185 heads with the 2.02 valves, they said it was a 80% chance they'd fit OK...but I wasn't about to take a chance. The 165's bolt on...or if you REALLY want some breathing...contact ATI for some AFR 165 heads. The're pricey..$1800 new...but flow fantastic. dino

To add to Dino's post, ATI stocks AFR heads and Ed Curtis will build you a custom cam for your setup if you want. My AFR heads were bought from Muscle motors around Christmas for $1199 and I waited ~3 weeks for delivery. I've read several people that were in the same boat regardless of dealer (JDS, ect)

Looks like everyone agrees on the heads, How about a set of 1.72 rockers on the stock cam?? Think its enough or is a cam a must??

oh ya, FFR2372 why do I need blankets that say FFR on them
????

Thanks

Jeff...be patient!! Let everybody give the're $.02 worth before making a decission on the heads. I would suggest a bigger cam...but how will you use the car?? If you like to cruise...the stock cam may be enough with the 1.72 rockers. If you're gonna be racing...maybe, at the maximum a comp cam 282HR....or something less with a more street friendly setup. Ask Gordan, hear he has a special grind from Crane. dino

Jeff,
Not the LAST ad, (newest), the First ad,(oldest). Actually, now that I've taken a second look, it's the second ad

Just my nickel, but put all the advice together to come up with a solution. The performer RPM heads don't work with the stock pistons. My suggestion would be to go with Twisted wedge heads which utilize the 2.02 intake without touching the pistons and go with an E or F cam with 1.6 Roller rockers. You will drastically increase the power range with a different cam. The stock cam with 1.72 increase your HP by about 10-15 HP but an E or F cam would give you closer to 25-40 HP over stock.

You can pick up a used cam for about $100 and the Twisted heads go for around $1000. The Roller rockers are around $150 used and you can offset the cost by selling your 1.72 and cyl. heads. Actually, you might find someone willing to trade 1.72 for 1.6. Good luck. You might want to upgrade to a 650 carb depending on which 600 you have. Tim

Jeff-

Just to be clear, my heads are the Performers NOT the Performer RPM's for reasons sited above. And yes I am happy with the HP numbers produced. Here are the dyno results:

HP:

Torque:

No clearance issues; but we did check before we started it! ;)

The 1.72's from Crane (same as the Ford 1.72's).

i just installed 1.72's over the stock cam with AFR heads and a cobra intake. there are cars that make good power with this combo. the stock cam isnt a wallflower anyway. its the heads that hold the 5.0 back from 350 hp. once you get above that NA, then the cam can help peak HP by moving the powerband higher in the rev range, but you will likely lose low end (before 4K RPM) power.

boost salves all power deficiencies. =)
