Picked up my new junkyard IRS, and need to know how to disassemble the thing.

1. Do the half-shafts connect inside the pumpkin with C-clips?? (Like the 8.8 live axle)

2. The large spindle nut that connects the rotor has a strange looking retainer that wraps around the nut on all sides, anyone know how to remove it?

Thanks

1. there are circlips on the ends of the axles and you just pull them out of the pumpkin....I usually gently persuade them by putting a pry bar in between the pumpkin and the CV they should come right out but you will need to replace the circlips
2. It a one time use nut that is torqued to 250 ft/lbs A good long bar or an impact gun will take it right off

When I was doing mine the manual said to use a 36mm socket , but that started to slip. I found that a 35mm or a 1-3/8 socket worked much better.
Like MN12 said the half shalfs just pull out of the pumkin with just a little prying.
There is a several pages worth of info on the IRS in the FAQ area if you need more indepth info.

the ffr faq says to use a "large screw driver" to pop the half shafts out of the dif. i found that a carpenter's pry bar works great. (it's the sort of short, flat crowbar that is used to remove nails.) the "straight" end of the bar has a very slight curve that fits perfectly between the pumpkin and the shaft. regards

Thanks for the replies, I was able to slip the half-shafts out with the smallest of effort with a crowbar. I will tackle the rotors and hubs after I purchase a large enough socket.

See Ya
