What tools would you suggest are really needed, in particular for making mods, band saw? Lathe? Vertical drill?
As for mechanics, I would say:
Grinder/cut off wheel has been very handy.
Good multi-rotating vice.
Right angle drill adapter for hard to drill spots.
Tap set
Drill bit/ tap all in one bit - fantastic.
People have been saying a band saw and lathe is good for precision cuts on the spacers needed for engine mounting and such. However, that is a lot of tool for a few cuts if you do not own one. So I say vice, cut off wheel and grinder to trim it in. Or, I am going to use a miter box with long tubing and a wood jig with 10" cut off wheel. Only cost $4 for the "blade". We will see.
As for body work:
Air reciprocating saw
Small die grinder
Hook & Loop fastener Durablock's multiple sizes
On my videos, in the descriptions, I made up these overall list for people to easily check out and find tools:
