I'm using the Mustang rag-joint and with the steering shaft pillow blocks and bearings in place,.....the shaft slides in and out thru the bearings as the rag-joint flexes. "Search" indicates bearing retainers should be drilled for allen screws (mine are not). How do I keep the shaft from moving in the bearings and still allow the sfaft to collapse? I have found "collars" at GRAINGER that look like they would work for me.

There should be 2 collars with allen head set screws that go onto the steering shaft. One collar would go behind the front pillow block. The other collar would go in front of the rear pillow block. This will keep the steering shaft from moving but will still allow it to collapse in an accident.

While you are at this stage in the build, I would highly recommend replacing the rag joint with a u-joint type coupler from Flaming River. It will make a world of difference in handling.

The other option is to cut the rag joint off, get a LOWER STEERING JOINT FOR MANUAL RACK from RBC Industries in Michigan (888-722-9733) for $47.00 and weld it on in place of the rag joint - $47.00 part

Thanks guys....I found the two collars in one of my boxes. I'll think about replacing the rag-joint.

Ok Junior builder question here....what are the pillow blocks and do they come off the donor? I thought I was almost done ripping it apart but I keep finding new things that I should remove!

Two pillow blocks w/collars come with the kit. They are the two bearings that you use to mount the steering shaft.

Couple quick comments:

Consider the Breeze Lower Universal Shaft Kit, 70034. www.breezeautomotive.com

$45 Sounds attractive, but usually you have to pay the welder. Borgeson Universal strongly cautions against welding on an assembled needle bearing U-joint.

Breeze also offers the spacer and clamping shaft collar seperately from our 70008 at $9. You need a spacer to keep the collar back from the pillow block housing.
