The VSS signal often doesn't have enough oomph to drive the speedo. The taxi industry ran into this issue connecting their fare meters and they developed signal buffer modules to make things work.
I purchasedd one of these. I haven't wired it in yet as its part of my change over from T5 to AOD. My T5 has the S10 tailshaft with GM sensor that works fine with my speedo.
