I am planning on using the autometer gauges in my kit. Do I still need the donor speedometer cable?

Buy the electronic speedo and you won't need any cable, just 2 easy-to-route wires. The generic Ford pulse generator with a gear is under $40, which is less than a cable.

If you have the gages and the donor cable, you can use it, you'll need a reverser (~$40) if you have the AM "Cobra" gages with the reverse reading speedo. If it's standard rotation you can use the donor cable with a slight trimmng. Remove about 1" and slit the sides of the trimmed end. Attach with a hose clamp

Mike Forte sells a cable with a screw-on end, so you won't have to "mickey-mouse" the donor one. Pretty inexpensive also.

Be careful with the aftermarket cables! I bought one for about $65.00 from Mike Forte. It was shorter than the donor, had the screw-on end, and the correct speedo gear I needed with a nice black casing. It lasted only a couple of runs around my neiborhood in the go-cart before the speedo stopped working. When I took it out for inspection, I found that a spot in the middle had melted from the radiant heat of the header. It was at least 4" away at the closest point! The black casing on the cable acted like "shrink wrap"! I ended modifying my donor cable with the slit and hose clamp routine. Haven't had a problem since!
