Mounted mine right in the center lower portion of the firewall. It's a good location for all the wiring hookups.

Depends on the harness. If you are using the donor harness, the location is easier near the master cylinder; if Painless, center firewall is good. Good luck with your build, Bob

Hey Jeff, I have a point to make with you. Remember, someday there's going to be an engine and tranny sitting right there beneath your solenoid. Believe it or not, these items do fail from time to time. How the heck are you ever going to get that puppy off and back on?

I mounted my solenoid on the upper firewall, where it is accessible. Don't forget, once the body is on the car, the upper firewall is set WAY BACK and the solenoid is hardly noticable and certainly not "out of place". Just my 2 cents.

Dior you are right on the money.. Jeff it's going to be tight in there after the bellhousing is in place...

I have Painless carb car and wanted to keep wieres to a minimum so located the unit on pass foot box. short run to the starter and back to fire wall using wire loom..

you can just make it out there in front of header. Pic is not best but there is not a heat issue

Where not to mount it. If you are using Donor EFI harness you have to mount the selonoid and the coil somewhere on the driver's side about in the area of the master cylinder. I just got my body on and discovered I made 3 mistakes in mounting items.
I mounted the starter seloniod and the Coil so they are hanging on the side of upper 3/4 inch tubing where the body sits, along the driver's side. I did the same thing with the coolant recover tank on the other side. The problem is that the hood support cylinders (if you have this option) need a place lay when the hood is closed (Duh!). I have to move all three of these items down at least 2 inches.

The location in the back of the tunnel is not that difficult to get to. I have my battery cutoff switch there and installed and wired it into my completed car. There's plenty of room. My solenoid is mounted on a custom battery tray, and the battery is above the passenger side footbox, like an original street Cobra...but turned 90 degrees to expose the + terminal for easy access. With the reduction in battery wire length, the starter turns significantly faster.

With a Painless harness I would mount it like Jeff's. Easy access, if you ever need to jump start the battery, it's right there. Don't overlook the fact that you need to draw power for most of your electrical systems from the solenoid! Don't get it too far from your fuse block.

Look how much room you have between the engine and the firewall in Wnstwolf's pic, if you ever need to change it. Wnstwolf - where are you planning on mounting your fuseblock?

No problems mounting on aluminum, it does not need to be grounded

Here's mine:

The problem I see is that these are photos of it without the body on. On a carb car you might not have too much of a problem but on an injected car it wold be a pain in the ars. Maybe if you cut out the aluminum where you mount it and screw it in, where you could unscrew the aluminum from in the cockpit and pull the aluminum panel with the solinoid mounted to it out through the cockpit. Did I make myself clear or am I still on too much pain medication from ths hand surgery

I think Todger has the best idea for an EFI build if you are concerned about getting at it to replace it.

If you are carb put it wherever seems convenient.

I mounted mine on the front of the driver's footbox, inboard edge. It's somewhat hidden by the master cylinder & booster, but still accessible.
