Just cleaning up my donor brake booster tonight - the stock unit from a '95 Mustang. On the bottom of it is a strip of fairly deep rust, extending from where the master cylinder fastens to the brake booster, down to the lowest point on the booster...

Is this something I should worry about - is there an open area where the brake fluid could have been leaking on the donor ? Or think this is maybe just rust from water that had gotten in ? Just want to make sure the unit is good before I bother installing...

Thanks !

The master cylinder piston was leaking a small amount of brake fluid out the end of the piston. The fluid travels down to the bottom of the booster and then drips on the frame rail. The brake fluid eats the paint off the booster so now you have bare metal and the booster surface rusts.

It should not pose a problem if it is just surface rust on the booster shell...

HTH...

Thanks - I was going to ask whether it was worth dealing with or not - you answered the question. I'll look into getting a rebuilt one. Thanks again to both of you !
