What is the advantage to removing the smog pump? Obviously, it cleans the engine bay up, but is there a performance advantage realized when it is removed? What about emissions or computer controls on the car?

On my build I went with, "if it isn't required, get rid of it". Although the pump doesn't draw down alot of HP it will take some power away from your engine. Looks clearner without it too, as you say. Loose it and don't worry.

Lost the pump lost the little plastic cannister for recycled fuel, no ill effects after three years of running. If it doesn't have a purpose of improving HP, or it clutters the visuals, lose it.

Not only lose it, but you can then shorten the bracket that was holding it and further clean up the engine compartment and lose another 1 or two. If it doesn't make it go faster, it is probably not needed.
