Guys,

Got 1667 back home fine ... but about 1 1/4 mile from the house (I live on a country road with a not always so good surface), I hit a place a little too fast and the car "sat down" on the suspension (bottomed) for a split second.

Heard pretty nasty vibrating sounds from the right side of the car, so I checked. Broken rear mount on the right side pipe.

The pipes are 4 into 4's from Miek Mack (Kook's). They are Silver JetHot coated.

The weld for the mount simply came loose. Doesn't look like it was ever all that sturdy.

So ... looks like I need to take the pipe off, prep the surface, reweld it, touch up the coating in some way, and remount it.

Questions:

1) Whats the correct surface prep for the weld? (Can sand blast it ... good enough. or is there a better approach?)

2) Once it is welded, can the surface be retouched with ceramic coating rather than having the whole pipe and collector done?

3) Can this be done at home? If so, what is needed?

Thanks a bunch!

Mike - I wouldn't worry about sandblasting it. Just use your favorite grinder or dremel tool w/ a sanding disk to clean up the edge of the bracket and the area where it was welded to the pipe. You can help the new weld penetration by grinding a bevel on the edges of the bracket. Don't grind the coating back too far. As long as it's out of the weld, you're ok. The coating really close to the weld will probably turn opaque. That area is not really visible on the back of the pipe. I'd mask around the repair, scuff w/ sandpaper, and shoot some high temp silver paint over the weld. No real way to repair jet hot at home.
