My donor pallet did not come with the relay-starter cable so I'm going to start from scratch. Does the factory cable run a separate ground? If so, why and what gage? What is the best path? Length?

Thanks

Tom

Run a separate ground from the battery to the frame. You could get by with a 14" o.k. Depending on where the relay is, #4 cable should be just fine for the starter to relay connection. You can measure what you need when you place your solenoid and then have one made up at a local parts house, or they might even have the length you need. I ran mine between the bell housing and oil pan with the O2 sensor harness.

You will also need to run another ground between the frame and the engine block. This can be run from a bell housing bolt to the frame at the motor mount flat. Just drill and tap the mount upright to ground the cable.

This is how I did mine. Battery under the trunk behind axle. Ground wire to frame, about 18". Purchased from auto parts.

Ran positive cable from kit per the build instructions. Placed the starter relay on the lower 3/4" frame just below the MC on the drivers foot box. If you did not get the cable that goes from the relay to the starter you'll need this cable. It will work one of two ways depending on the type of starter you have.

1. Extermal cylinoid. My started is a smaller starter with an external cylinoid. This starter is alway wired "hot". That is, you run the + battery cable to one side of the starter relay. You attach another cable to the same side (+ side of relay) and run to the start. On the opposite side of the relay you run a 10 guage wire to the "blade" connector on the cylinoid. I ran through the motor mounts around the front of the oil pan and up to the starter. This is the Mustang routeing and works great.

2. If you have the large starter with the internal solinoid you use a different set up. Battery + to one side of the relay and the other side goes to starter. No 10 guage wire or blade connector on this set up.
