I just got my 3 link bundle with the coil-overs. Although I specified it was a "retro-fit", I didn't get the adapters for the coil overs to mount to the stock Mustang donor shock location. I've read a few posts which advised against this anyways. It looks like I have to drill a 1/2" hole in the "shock towers" (the square boxes) to run the bolt through. With a completed car, this doesn't look like a fun job at all. Is the mounting location in the trunk above the trunk floor, or is it below? Anyone have any pictures? Anyone install these as a retro-fit into an older car?

Believe it or not, Steve, the holes are almost exactly bisected by the floor aluminum. You'll have to drill above or below the floor, so you'll be off 1/4" or so, which isn't a problem. There's plenty of adjustment to work with, and you'll have to pick your own spot according to drill access. Try to get an angle adapter for your drill and start with a 1/4" hole. The frame material isn't all that tough to drill. I'll measure the exact location for you later on this evening.

Steve, Joe is correct as you can see mine were exactly level with the alum. How's a guy suppose to remove those later?

I drilled mine as high as I possible could because I'm using Konis (upside down) but you should have no problem. The only tough part was finding a piece of thick pipe 1/2" in diameter to use as spacers.

Take care,

hey steve; i just finished putting on the coilovers on creamsicle it's number is 1877 so it's not no fresh puppy. the holes are there in the shock tower, at least the were on mine, after rick williams did his i had bad thoughts cause his chassis is newer than mine but the holes should be there i did not even have to trim my aluminum just did a little bending here and there to make the bolts fit and the nuts. go look and tell me if they are there. rick

I looked at my frame quickly last night and I didn't see any holes drilled. It was a quick look, and the tires were still on, so I didn't get a great look, but I am pretty sure they were not there.

It looks like if I drill the holes as pictured in the post above, it might be easier than drilling the holes in the mount in the trunk. There isn't a ton of material below, but isn't most of the stress on the metal on the top, or pushing from below?

The coil-over option did not exist early on. So early frames are not drilled. It's basically drill where you can and still fit the top eye of the shock in.

I used some older Koni shocks and ended up welding on some 3/16" steel tabs to square off the angled bottom edge of the shock mount boxes.

The above pictures should help a lot, depending on your shocks you may have to add some metal.
