I recently bought a 5 lug rear disc brake conversion kit from Discbrakesrus.com. The kit uses 1995 Cobra claipers and vented rotors along with Richard Oben's rear brackets. After installing the brackets, calipers and rotors, I noticed that both the rotors rubbed on the inside of the the caliper bracket. I was wondering if anyone has had a similar experience with this modification?

It is a 1990 Mustang axle with 1990 and 1991 Ford Ranger driver side axles. All the bolts are tight, the C clips and pin is installed in the differential and the brackets are flush against the axle housing.

I emailed Richard Oben about it and his solution was to grind off what was rubbing and his installation instructions indicate that the rotor might need to be turned to fit. Neither of these seem like a good solution to me. Diskbrakesrus is going to send me another set of brackets to see if they fit better.

A few words of caution to those considering a 5 lug rear disc conversion:

1) Not all Aerostar passenger side axles from '86-'97 Aerostar will work. Some do not have a C lip on the end and have a pressed on bearing.

2) The Cobra rotor will not center on the axle as it was orginally designed. You will have to center it on the lugs with O-rings or machine a spacer.

3) You can't use regular SN95 caliper brackets, because they will not clear the wider vented rotor.

4) You can't use regular SN95 brake pads because they are too thick and will not clear the rotor.

Thanks
Donny

Donny,

I've got the same setup, but I haven't installed it yet.

I'm pretty sure I remember reading that you will need to use the Cobra intermediate bracket as well as Cobra pads.

The C-clip holds the axle inside the housing. If the axle breaks, the wheel will fly off if equipped with a drum brake system! So maybe when they went to rear disks, they eliminated the c-clip, as the rotor will hold the axle in place if the axle breaks. Can anyone confirm you should look for Aerostar axles with 5 lug drum breaks?

hey donny, i have that setup, richard obens brackets, sn-95 calipers, rotors . same problems also, i did what richard reccomended, used a grinding wheel to open up the caliper bracket maybe a 1/8th inch, the pads i used a belt sander to take them down so i could get them on the rotors. i was not too impressed when i found out i had to do this too make them work, but i'll find out in a week or two when i can start the motor and take it for a cruise. also i checked mine and the rotors are loose on the axles, i will be putting on the wheels today, so im kinda curious as to how they will fit, ill let you know when i know.vince

Pan61:

I spent about 30 minutes on the phone discussing this modification with Richard before I made my decision. He sells 3 brackets 4 lug , 5 lug SN95 rotor and 5 lug Cobra rotor. According to him all these parts should fit and the problem is that the intermediate bracket is a modified SN95 rather than a Cobra bracket and it was not widened enough.

Dragonsnake:

I bought the Cobra pads and loaded calipers with what was supposed to be the Cobra intermediate bracket.

Vince:

I plan on getting a little spacer ring to make up the gap between the rotor and the axle rather than using the O rings
