For any one piece seal it's always easy to remember that the spring in the seal faces the pressure side or inwards towards the crankcase...

If it is a two-piece seal you should be able to see the machined seal location mimics the seal contour. Set the seal into the block and into the main cap with an offset (don't match them up to the flat of the cap and block) so the parting line is offset. This will prevent leakage in the future. A small dab of silicone at each joint will help as well...
