OK - I've decided to jump into this FFR Cobra challange and build the damn thing already. I'm going to build a mostly stocker for now and I'll warm the engine during the winter after my first season of driving. I'm trying to condense my research time so I can get the thing ordered while they're on sale, so please offer tips/suggestions on the following:

REAR COIL-OVERS - I know I want them, but I don't know if I should buy them from FFR.
1. What (besides the shocks themselves) does FFR's coil-over conversion kit come with?
2. Are the upper mounts included with the standard FFR package, or are the added only if you buy the coil-over option?
3. Is there a better/cheaper source for the shocks?

HEATER
4. How does Tristates heater compare with the FFR one?
5. Does Tristate supply ducts and vent's?
6. For defrost too?

WIPERS
7. Is there a better/cheaper wiper set-up than the cable type from FFR?

TIA - I look forward to learning & sharing more with y'all in the coming months.

Welcome to the cult Fred! ;)
I can give you a little help with one of your questions.
I'm not at liberty to reveal any names at this point ;) , but I know there are a couple guys working on putting together a coil over shock package that's $100-$200 cheaper than the one FFR sells. There should be more info in the next couple weeks.

I'm just beginning my build so I'm asking some of the same questions.

As far as wipers here's an excellent discussion of the subject - look for the post by John Phillips. I found this motor that is self-parking. Here and here are two other threads about wipers.

Do a search in the archives and you'll find most questions have been asked and answered. It's a great tool!

Welcome to the club!! You will enjoy the association a lot. It sounds like you have done a lot of homework. Here is my 2 cents worth:

REAR COIL-OVERS: I have IRS so not an question I can comment on other than this: FFR options are engineered for the FFR roadster. They tend to fit. They tend to have been tested by others or in competion. They tend to stand behind their product.

BASIC PHILOSPHY on options: I went down the list with FFR because I want them to succeed and stay in business. Some options, say oil cooler, can be maybe purchased cheaper elsewhere but when you add all the fittings, hoses, brackets, etc. the FFR option is more complete, less hassle, and "factory stock" in the sense that it is FFR approved. Anyway, that's just me...not everyone or you.

HEATER I have seen two cars with heaters and have no desire for one. In a roadster, it is like a motorcycle...why heat the outdoors? (me again, sorry)

WIPERS I bought the FFR kit. It looks a little complicated but others have it so it will work.

You did not mention TOP . Are you planning a top?

WHEELS You did not mention the look you want: vintage or modern? For the vintage look you want to narrow the rear by 2.5" per side so deeper dish wheels fit under the fenders without the tires rubbing. What are you planning for wheels?

Keep the faith! Keep us posted on your plans and decisions.

Fred - Thanks for the heater links.

Larry - A heater means another 2 months a year for crusin' in the Cobra. Wheels will be modern, probably Cobra R, 5 spoke. No top for now. Lastly, I too admire the Smiths and want to support their business, but my wife couldn't care less about FFR and I'm on a limited budget.

I understand about the heater and the budget; no problem! Here is an example of stock rear end with 4-lug Cobra Wheels, non-chrome roll bar:

Really nice car, no extreme spending, although the sidepipes look coated.

Keep us posted on your progress, Fred.

There is curenty a cheaper alternative to the FFR coilovers detailed in the FAQ section. THey are substantially cheaper and a better brand in my opinion. Here is the write-up:

Rear Coil-Overs - Putting together your own kit

[David Borden] OK guys, here's the scoop for the Bilstien coilovers for the rear.

Call Randy Larson at Larson Racing Products in CA
1 707 765 6961

Order the Bilstein S7M with 230/78 linier valving. (Mini Racing Shock.

These are special order from Bilstein and they will not have them in stock. You may want to mention this is for a FFR roadster and that the a customer Scott Peterson just ordered a set from them.

You need these parts also, (provided by Tom)

One for each shock: Coilover kit is Bilstein part# 193102
Two for each shock: Rodends are Bilstein part# 193252-002

Some have stated you need 12 inch 1 7/8" springs. I've tested Scott Petersons shocks on my spec racer and the 10 inch 1 7/8" springs seemed perfect when fitted to the 3 link at 4.5" ride height. I don't think it would change much for a standard rear setup though. Maybe someone can shed some light on this.

You will need to source your own bolts and spacers etc, and you will need to drill a diagonal hole in your shock tower, or find another way to mount the upper portion of the shock.

Heater: I bought the tristates heater, both are difficult to hook up but the tristates is cheaper. The vintage air has a nicer switch. I would get a heater if you plan on driving the car in cold weather frequently. Wind-chill is a mother. I bought a heater and I live in California!
