I have a very clean tank that I pulled at the salvage yard. I am currently planning to POR-15 that tank. I assume I do not need the grey foam padding that is on the top of the tank when I install into the FFR?

Also, I have read all the past threads about painting the plastic tank guard and it sounded like the results were mixed. Mine is a little scuffed up and I was hoping to paint it black. Any suggestions on paint type?

Thanks,
- Jesse

I tried test painting my tank cover, on the inside. The result was poor. The paint just didn't want to stick very well to the plastic. I ended up just cleaning the cover and putting it on and it looks fine.

scrub the heck out of the plastic with warm soapy water and a brush. Then some armor-all or black magic tire stuff and it will look nice.

Jesse,

Foam: Mine didn't have it.

Plastic: I used some laundry soap (smells nice) and a brush to scrub the dirt, then 80 grit paper to roughen it up. Painted it flat black (spray can) and looks great.

Take care,

Get rid of the foam. Paint the tank with POR-15. I used paint for flexible bumpers on the cover. Looks great.

For the tank, I cleaned it with Simple Green and then used the POR Marine Clean to make sure it was really grease-free. The adhesive on the back of the foam was still attached, so I left the foam in place and masked it off when painting. I etched the tank metal surfaces using POR Metal Ready. Primed the tank using Rustoleum white metal spray primer. Top coated the tank with Rustoleum gloss grey.

The black plastic tank cover was cleaned using the same process with Simple Green and Marine Clean. Then I primed the black plastic cover with DupliColor Adhesion Promoter (basically a plastic bumper clear primer) and then top coated with Duplicolor gloss black PLASTIC bumper paint (flexible).

The tank looks like brand new (has 120k miles) and the black cover looks nice. While I could have bought a new black plastic tank cover (and maybe should have if it was only $35), the materials were less than $12 to repaint and the parts will all be covered up or underneath the car when its completed.

Be sure to siphon out all of the unused gas prior to doing all of this if you're using donor parts as I had a mild environmental issue (read: dead grass) near my driveway during the cleaning stage.
