I would like to ask you a few questions about a 390 build..
"You can build a 390FE with a Crane cam, Melling oil pump, aluminum intake, Ford FMS distributor, Holley 4bbl, Road Race oil pan, correct FE valve covers, aluminum water pump, that will snort out 420+ HP for less than $2200.00. My favorite build for a 427SC style car that you can log many thousands of miles on with little or no service.
The trick is, you'll need 2.95's on the rear, learn to pedal it out of the hole and shortshift at 4200RPM. No small block with that budget base will ever beat you and the few that might have beyond $5k in them."
