My daughter came home from college with her 95 Nissan Maximum and says her car runs lousy with anything less then a quarter tank of gas. Well I chucked and made a joke but she is serious. I have never experienced this and have a newer Maximum (Mustang in pieces as well). Now she is no motorhead but she is also no airhead either graduating with honors this spring with an Economics degree. So does anyone have an explanation or perhaps you want to poke some fun at my daughter, fire away.
Thanks Rob Baker

My ideas:
1) Bad fuel pump - they tend to "fade away" rather than die completely.
2) Gas tank not venting properly - as fuel level falls, it's harder for the pump to pull gas from it.

Alot of cars depend on the gas to cool the in-tank pump. Your fuel pump could be on it's way to the grave. I had almost the same problem with my old 84 Mazda RX-7 GSL.

Also sounds like contaminated fuel. Check and see if some schmutz is floating on top of the fuel. When the level gets low enough, it starts picking up contaminated fuel.

But I agree, sounds a lot like a bad fuel pump.
