My 87 5.0 based MK1 roadster had a coolant leak in the garage. I needed to replace the water pump. My buddy gave me a new water pump from his 89 5.0 because he went with a full polished pump a year ago so I just swapped it. In doing so I noticed that the impellers were different from my old pump to the new pump. I did some research and found that my old water pump was a normal rotation water pump that I had running as a reverse water pump! Go figure  It never overheated but ran hot if I was in stop and go traffic on a 100+ degree day for a period of time. I read that some guys do this on purpose to free up an extra 5 hp or so as the water cavates less, freeing up friction but the water moves about 2/3rds slower. Anyway, it didn't damage my engine and I have the right one on now. You should have seen the look on my face  -John
