Evertime I open this site on my home computer, I get another window that offers a upgrade to Explorer Morpheus. I can't get rid of it. What's the deal?

It's the music's industry's worst nightmare. Basically its a site where you can download just about any song under the sun for free. Most people will then burn themselves a CD with all the hits they like for free ;) Ask any teenager for more details.

Take care,

Thanks Bill. I worded my message poorly and did not mean to imply this was part of your site. I access this site and many others from many computers and this is the only time the window pops up. Just wanted to know where else I need to look.

There must be some new breed of virus out there. I mysteriously got a new calendar installed on my PC which showed up in the lower right corner of the screen. I didn't think a thing of it; maybe I had not noticed it all this time.

Turns out this calendar was spawning ads everytime I opened Internet Explorer. Some quick research on the Net for "GAIN" software let me to the culprit. I had to uninstall it from Windows. It pisses me off because I never (knowingly) installed it in the first place.

Lee, for Windows 95/98, right click your task bar at the bottom, choose Properties, then click the Start Menu tab. Now click Remove and then click the name of the program ie Morpheus and then click remove once more. Hope this helps.

Take care,

Morpheus is great, but it can be dangerous. It allows individuals access to parts of your file system. Even when not dangerous, it's annoying at times because your network connection slows down due to the activity it draws.

When installed it defines a folder that is shared with all other morpheus users. If there's something in that folder (which won't happen unless you download something through morpheus or put something there purposely), it is automatically shared and you will become a file server whenever you are online. This slows your access to the web. By default, it starts anytime you are connected(by dial up etc.). This can be changed (I believe) by right clicking on the icon in the taskbar and unchecking the option.

I'm going to second Ozona here. Everyone should go to the lavasoft site, download, install, and run Ad-Aware. I run it every month or so. Its a piece of software that scans your computer and removes "Spyware" and other little advertising related programs that got installed somehow without you knowing it.

I never go to porn sites. I never open unknown emails.

HOWEVER, the other day, an email managed to open, execute, and load a phone dialer onto my computer. It loaded an Icon on my desk top. It loaded an icon in the window that comes up if you left click on Start. ANd, i believe it loaded into the start routine.

AND it put a very x rated popup on my screen giving me the opportunity to click an a 900 porn site that it was ready to dial.

I dont know why it did not just go ahead and dial the site.

There was just an article in the news about the recording industry trying to get legislation to allow them to install viruses on the Morpheus type of sight. I'm with Rlogan on this. it can be very dangerous. There are enough wierdos out there with virus that can attack you system. We definatley don't need legalized industrial strenght viruses added intentionally!

When ever I log into a porn sight I use your e-mail address so that my wife won't kill me! Sorry for the inconvienence but I'm a Marine what kind of honor did you expect.

Ok I'm just kidding but since my teenage son uses my family computer I've noticed an amazing upswing in the number of pop up attacks as well as unrequested E-mails. Oh well at least I'm pretty sure he likes girls. : )

Newsgroups are great! :D I only visit the kitcar group though  , no really! I swear...

Cobra Earl,
When you send and receive email you can typically choose text/html. Text is the safer of the two but it limits content(color, images, formatting)

Well....if u have kids like me....it is truly amazing how much crap u end up with on the puter. Although the house rules r that no one is allowed on the net without an adult present (my wife:)) we still end up with messenger garabage and a lot of spam. Need to get my own puter!

First line of defense...get a good anti-vitus program and update it frequently.

If you are using a cable modem do your self a favor and get a firewall. I'm running NetZone at home and it logs the hits to my computer from the outside world. Were talking of places like Korea, China etc...Fortunately I block all incoming ip's.
