Unless I'm missing something, that doesn't make much sense, unless they specified a backspacing. The way I understand, backspacing is backspacing, so if a 18x10.5 with 6" backspacing clears the 3-link, an 18x12 with 6" backspacing would clear.

Am I missing anything?

I would think that is correct. I have these 18x11 wheels in the 25th anniversary style on my MK2 with a 3 link. Note the backspace is 6.46" though.

I suspect the rim fits just fine with the proper backspacing. But depending on the tire sidewall which typically extends beyond the rim maybe not. I would recommend working with someone familiar with fitting custom wheels and tires before ordering anything you can't return.

that’s promising. 6.46 backspacing means the wheel extends that far inward toward the center of the car, so 6” backspacing should work no problem. I can just about make out the tire size in your photo…295/35r18?

that’s a good question…and another problem I have with the manual saying 10.5 max rim width for a 3-link…based on what axle length?!

Some rudimentary measurements make it look like 18x11 will fit for sure. 18x12 may work too with a 26” tire. Here’s an 18x10.5 with a 28” tire and it fits very well: Aesthetics – Maui Brandhoff’s ’65 FF Shelby Daytona Coupe – VARA GTO Class Champion
