A few weeks ago there was a link to an article on an original 289 travelling cross-country.

The vehicle had a trunk mounted luggage rack on which to mount a suitcase.

Anyone know where to get one that will fit a FFR trunk?

I am planning on next years vacation being a cross-country run from VA to AZ and back. At this point my wife thinks I'm nuts but there is plenty of time. I will need a luggage rack for sure.

Look forward to hearing from you knowledgeable people. This forum has given me a ton of tips that helped my build.

Another option is Earl's big trunk kit. He can pack a ton of stuff in there.

I believe Bob Putnam made one for an ERA and used an MG setup. I recall him saying it fit well, but maybe he had to machine some spacers.

They have a picture of the car on their website. It's a 289 green car.

I have already been looking into this as I have alot of experience with MGs. The luggage racks that are used on MGs, especcially the later models was used on several different Makes and models of american cars. One was the pontiac Sunbird. You could just go to the local boneyard and look around. You might find something you could modify easily enough. The ones that came from MG are not available in the MG catalogs anymore. But you might want to find a British car show in your area, and check out the swaps/vendor tents. I was toying with the idea of welding up an aluminum one that would look period but modern, or welding up one of metal and having it chromed. It wouldn't be hard. After all a luggage rack is really just a grid shaped spacer to keep things off your paint. Of course once you drill the holes and mount it your going to have a definite touring look.

We dropped in CobraEarl's trunk one day last week and I will soon add the curved trunk bar...because I want all the dry storage I can get. But I too anticipate the need for a rack after MARIAH is on the road. There are 11 different racks in the Moss Motors Austin-Healey catalog. Some of these could be made to fit or serve as a guide to fabricate one for the FFR. Good Luck.

Can Earl's trunk fit a medium sized body? Let me rephrase that: Will a medium sized body (150-190 lbs.) fit in Earl's trunk?

After seeing the photos, I think it would. I know it would if you did some cutting and rearranging. Maybe just a little breaking and folding would work. You would probably have to do a little experimenting with different body types. :D

I had a luggage rack for my TR-3 way back when.

It was pretty universal in that it could fit almost any sports car. You could detatch it in a few minutes and just leave 4 chrome buttons on your trunk.

The thing that made it universal was that the mounting buttons were wedges. You would angle the wedges in the correct direction for the four rack legs to sit flat. Pretty slick. Should not be hard to mount any rack you find by making up some wedges and rotating each corner until you get an even mount.

If you're going to do it, do it right...finger tips and teeth only. No ID that way. (So I've heard).

Joe,

if you cut it up into enough small pieces, Im sure it could.

I doubt that Dior would fit in there, , , , , we'd have to make TWO trips.. :D :D :D

PERSONALLY, id worry about the fiber glass and the hinges of the FFR trunk being able to support one of these racks.

I saw a rack at a English car show that attached under the trunk hinges and under the tag light. No holes in the trunk lid and it looked strong enough.
Another project for Earl, the trunk man!
