the freon has dye in it, it we'd see the dye around the leak, and it plugs in where the unit is charged ?

Sounds pretty simple.

Dye is only available to Certified A/C Techs. Sounds like it might be the way to go.

Anyone wanna take a bet the leak will be in the most expensive part? And then that the 'next' leak will be from the vibrations etc while installing the 'most expensive part' ?

do not let the service tech add dye.
you have to be certified to add refrigerant.
look for an oil stain if the leak is on the high side.
if you have nitrogen available you could add it and check using soap. make sure that the unit is off. if you do find the leak and repair it the system will need to be evacuated with a vacuum pump and you will still need to call a service tech to charge it.
DO NOT USE OXYGEN IT WILL GO BOOM.
you are best calling a service tech.....mike
