I am being told that I cannot insure the car until it is titled with a VIN #. I am also told that I cannot title it until it is complete and the state inspects it and gives it a VIN # and title. Trouble is I need to transport it now before it is finsihed to get it painted. I was thinking a rider on the tow vehicle policy might cover it but I am not comfortable asking the person who was nice enough to offer his truck and trailer to transport it to add to his insurance to cover the car too!

My current agent has always stated it is covered under my homeowners (personal property) policy while in my home under construction because it is technically not a car yet but a "collection of parts".

How have others handled this catch 22? I've got over $26K in parts alone that I do not want to take a risk with.

I could probably figure out a way just to transport the body alone and reduce my exposure but this is an open car trailer and I am not sure it would be feasible. The idea is/was to transport with minimal fasters on the chassis. Remove from chassis at destination and return home with chassis (body shop wants body only).

Thanks,
Matt

Talk to your insurance agent. It may still be considered a "pile of parts" until you actually get the VIN.

If not, I'm sure you can get some sort of short term insurance for it as personal goods.

THis is one of the reasons I did not pick mine up myself, aside from the 24hours of driveing time.

I was actually fairly mad at my insurance company for what they said i would have to spend to have it covered while in transit.

I ended up getting a hell of a deal from Whitby motors and only having to haul it 50 miles. If we had wrecked, I would have been SOL i guess.

My neibor picked it up on his trailor. So since the kit was mine and the trialor was his, behind his truck, we may have been covered. NOT SURE.

Insurance, lawyers, lawyers, insurance . . . . . . . . . . . . ggrrowwll :( :(

I'm taking the body off, renting a box truck, and bringing just the body to the painter. I'll probably rent a U-Haul car trailer , borrow a friends truck and bring the chassis to the body when it's done.
You could just as easily rent a truck again to bring the body home. That way the only thing that ever leaves your garage is the body.

P.S. If you rent a truck, DON'T tell them your moving anything related to car stuff.
Tell them your moving furniture.
