Ok here is a Q for you Vet's out there.

My current auto carrier will add my Cobra to my current policy if it is a Replica. If I call it a Kit I am out of luck. So of course I said it is a Replica. Mike at American Modern Insurance also hooked me up as a back up (Mike is on the Vendor page and is very nice to deal with)

Current policy with Replica in the policy I pay $190 no mile restriction

If I go with Mike its $225 with similar restrictions as my 68 Mustang and Taylor who stated no more "KIT" cars will be covered.

So are we a kit or a replica? Hate to dig deep and ask and would hate to get in an accident and realize I am not covered cause I am a kit not a Replica???

You get the car in "Kit" form, but it "Replicates" a Cobra. Catch 22, isn't it.

I would say it replicates a cobra, so it is a replica. The GTM would be a kit car.

Just my thoughts.

You don't necessarily get it in "Kit" form, if you got it from a builder or bought it completed, you are getting a complete 427 Cobra "Replica".

Semantically speaking, it's only a kit when it is unassembled. When it is done, it is a car. It just so happens to be of a style, replicating a Cobra.

There really is no such thing as a "kit" car. Only cars assembled from kits.

Clear as mud?

To be safe, I would ask each insurance provider for their definition of "kit" vs "replica". It is very possible that your car meets both criteria. To CYA, get your agent to sign something stating which category you car falls under.

Did just that snake.. The Insurance guy is great.. Went for a ride and when we got back his statement was "this is one [email protected]#en fast Replica!

The police states that the car is a 1965 Ford 2-door cobra replica...

I just went through this with my insurance guy. The final determination was that unless it was manufactured by Ford, Chevy, Chrysler, etc, as a replica, or that it has their endorsement, (I doubt that will ever happen, remember the lawsuit with FFR)it's a kit. The bottom line is, the insurance companies are looking for somebody with deep pockets to fall back on in case of a lawsuit.

Because the FFR Certificate of Origin did not state either "kit" or "replica", my Florida title says "1965 Roadster." Soooooo?!? I used K&K Insurance and they never asked as they are familiar with the FFRs.

My car was changed to a custom built, 2001 reconstruction this year by the NCDMV. It was previously listed as a 65 Ford with State Farm.
I informed them of the change and told them to call it anything that they wanted as long as it stayed insured. They now call it a kitcar and my rate only went up 70 bucks a year

Not too long ago I read in here the the politically correct nomenclature is "an assembled vehicle". While this is technically right I don't know if it would satisfy all insurance companies and or all registrys of motor vehicles. When the time comes for my kit to progress from boxes of parts to a drivable vehicle I will try this route. Bob
